'Banksy of Bulgaria' Turns Soviet-Era Statues into American Superheroes
An unknown artist who’s called “the Banksy of Bulgaria” has created an impressive bit of street art using well known American icons including comic book characters. Identified as “Moving with the Times,” the piece replaces the Soviet troops with American icons like Superman, Robin, the Joker, Ronald McDonald and Captain America.Built in 1954 in the capital city of Sofia, the statue depicts Russian Red Army soldiers “liberating” Bulgaria, commemorating the coup d’état that installed Communism in Bulgaria and began a long and ultimately painful relationship with the Soviet Union. The Daily Mail reports that while monuments of this kind were once sacrosanct, but have been prime targets for graffiti artists since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990. Ralph Lauren Fall 2011: Ironic that in a season when young designers are riffing on American themes, Ralph Lauren — let’s call him the Captain America of fashion — opted for a Far Eastern journey. Namely, the Orient. It made for a dramatic collection, starting with the lacquer-black runway. Reed Krakoff Fall 2011: While he worked in a neutral palette of cool grays and shades of camel, pops of teal and purple looked especially cool in the lineup and were a great complement to the muted tones. The next month or two of work on Xanga 2.0 is going to be busy, so I wanted to share with everyone a roadmap of how we’re thinking about things! We’re dividing the work on this project into four basic phases. Phase 1. Data migration As described here, we’ve imported over every account that we have on Xanga over to the new system so that anyone who could sign into Xanga can still sign into Xanga 2.0. Finally and most important of all, we’ve imported over 2 million blogs from the old system. * We’ve archived the blogs of the hundreds of thousands of blogs where the user has logged in in the past 5 years and has at least two subscribers. * We did an additional set of archives for 200k users who had logged in the past year and had at least 10 blogs. * We’ve also archived the blogs of every single user that’s ever been premium at any point in the past… And of course, a lot of you guys archived your own blogs using the old Xanga archive generator.
