Link Building Tools We Use at Distilled
The author's posts are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz. We recently gathered up a list of all the link building tools and resources we turn to daily across the company at Distilled. In the "TAGFEE" spirit of generosity, we thought it might be useful to others and we thought we'd share it here. Link building is on our minds a lot of the time anyway, but even more so at this time of year in the run up to our Linklove link building conferences in London and Boston (it's in less than a month and yes, there's a discount for SEOmoz PRO members in the discount store, see below for more details or check out the trailer and a testimonial). We have a variety of people helping our clients get more links in different ways and in different roles at Distilled. The Secret Double Life of Blog Posts One of the things I've learned blogging is that a blog post can have two distinct lives. Upon hitting the publish button a blog post lives in the sparkly social spotlight. But soon the lights fade and the crowd goes home. It's time for that blog post to start working a 9 to 5 job, bringing traffic to your site each and every week. Optimizing your posts for both of these lives is important but takes some foresight. Here's how I do it. The Social Life The social life of a blog post is short, lasting between 48 hours and two weeks if you're lucky. One of the best ways to do this is to optimize your social snippet with a snappy Title. For my 'What is SEO?' Clearly I am not trying to rank for the term SEO Chef! So how did I do at generating social proof for this post? Not bad. The 9 to 5 Life Fast forward 10 days and the social life of this post had essentially run its course. 28 isn't that bad. I change the Title of this post so it's appropriately targeted for 'What is SEO?' Life Synergy

Over the years, we've grown the Moz blog to nearly a million visits each month and helped lots of other blogs, too. I launched a personal blog late last year and was amazed to see how quickly it gained thousands of visits to each post. NOTE: This post replaces a popular one I wrote on the same topic in 2007. #1 - Target Your Content to an Audience Likely to Share When strategizing about who you're writing for, consider that audience's ability to help spread the word. If you can identify groups that have high concentrations of the blue and orange circles in the diagram above, you dramatically improve the chances of reaching larger audiences and growing your traffic numbers. #2 - Participate in the Communities Where Your Audience Already Gathers Thankfully, you don't need to spend a dime to figure out where a large portion of your audience can be found on the web. sources: Comscore + Google
