Chairs Made From Old Computers Offer Interactive Seating Photos via BRC Designs We've seen a lot of things made from computer parts but this might be the most elaborate. A series of furniture, including chairs and a table, have been fashioned from junked hardware... and they couldn't be more interesting. They're even interactive! I definitely agree -- this looks cool, but I'm not so sure about sitting directly on these old computer parts that have been busted up and refashioned together. BRC Designs writes: The Binary Chair 01 or BNR011000110110100001100001011010010111001001-00110001BRC Designs, featuring modern studio-built furniture by Benjamin Rollins Caldwell, is excited to unveil two new pieces to The Binary collection: The Binary Chair 01 and Binary Chair 02 . The amount of effort put into construction is pretty impressive -- here is the underside: There's another version of a chair, more of a dining chair style. It is made from ethernet cables stripped to the wires, then woven and held in place with grounding wire clamps.

Rescued Humpback Whale Thanks Divers That Cut Her Free “The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” — Charles Darwin (OCEANS/WHALE RESCUE) PACIFIC OCEAN — When a humpback whale became entangled in hundreds of yards of nets and fishing line, she was lucky to be spotted by a caring fisherman. Rescuers arrived and spent hours cutting her free. Read below to see how the whale thanked each diver individually! And from all of us here at Global Animal, we hope you are fortunate enough to be surrounded by people who help you get untangled from anything that binds you. A front page story in the San Francisco Chronicle told the story of a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. A fisherman spotted the whale just east of the Farallon Islands (beyond the Golden Gate bridge) and radioed an environmental group for help. The divers say that once the female humpback was free to move, she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. Love it.

Cost of air conditioning for U.S. troops in MidEast more than NASA budget The United States spends $20.2 billion annually on air conditioning for troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan — more than NASA's entire budget, NPR reported. In fact, the same amount of money that keeps soldiers cool is the amount the G-8 has committed to helping the fledgling democracies in Tunisia and Egypt. The necessary cooling costs so much because of the remote locations and danger involved in delivery equipment and fuel, Steven Anderson, a retired logistician who served under Gen. David Petraeus in Iraq. "When you consider the cost to deliver the fuel to some of the most isolated places in the world — escorting, command and control, medevac support — when you throw all that infrastructure in, we're talking over $20 billion," Anderson told NPR. And it's a long way to move the fuel: 800 miles of "improved goat trails" separate Karachi, where the fuel is shipped in, to Afghanistan.

LED Lights Make Augmented Vision a Reality | Elemental LEDucation LED Lights Make Augmented Vision a Reality Okay, this is just freaky. We know LED lights are versatile enough to be used for practically anything, but LED contact lenses? Once miniature green LEDs are developed (and they’re in the works, as of now), full color displays will be possible. Lead researcher Babak Parvis comments “You won’t necessarily have to shift your focus to see the image generated by the contact lens,” it would just appear in front of you and your view of the real world will be completely unobstructed when the display is turned off. Ah, the real world. Thanks to Extreme Tech for the quote and Trendhunter for the images. By the way, these freaky LED contact lenses may still be a product of the future, but a lot of cool LED products are of the present!

Pouring Light Lamp by Yeongwoo Kim Pour Me Some Light Human actions play such a significant role in design; it’s either evident in the form or in the function. In the Pouring Light, the action is evident in the form and is delightfully executed as well! With the motive of giving off “an emotional flow of light”, the lights linger on with a mesmerizing effect thanks to the use of phosphorescence in the “water” part. Yeongwoo suggests the use of LED lights to conserve energy, and my suggestion to him: get this in the market ASAP!

He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide." And for plenty of good reasons, since: it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting it is a major component in acid rain it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state accidental inhalation can kill you it contributes to erosion it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical. He feels the conclusion is obvious.

Vertical Home Gardens: Modular Stacking Green Wall System Dazzled by dangling gardens, but wish you could have one of your own? This neat and simple system of stackable modules makes it easy to create indoor or outdoor garden ‘plots’, hung from walls or built up from floors, window ledges and deck railings. The rather minimalist black and white (though also green) polypropylene plastic ‘pots’ hide a system that both retains moisture but keeps plants lower down from becoming over-watered, by draining excess liquid directly down to a storage trough in the base. The material itself within these Minigardens is designed not to leach toxins into your soil or plants, but is a smooth synthetic that can be more easily cleaned. “Minigarden is perfect for building a small living wall or simply combine together to create a large vertical garden.
