Copyright-Free Photo Archive: Public Domain Photos and Images The photo archive at Gimp-Savvy.com has more than 27,000 free photos and images saved on our own dedicated server, consisting of over 2.5 Gbytes of data. The goal is to make this archive a resource for collage and photo-montage using digital image editing techniques such as those described in Chapter 7 of Grokking the GIMP. To improve the archive's usefulness, full indexing of the images is planned. However, this job would be taxing for a single person, and would probably produce only mediocre results. Consequently, the solution is to provide an interactive environment allowing the community to participate in the labelling of archived photos. The expectation is that the resulting index will be both richer and more robust than one fashioned by any so-called master architect.

Photoshop CS4: A Picture Worth a Thousand Words I love Photoshop techniques that offer all kinds of possibilities for experimentation—and the following tutorial is a perfect example of one of those techniques. In this issue, we’re going to take a portrait and replace the person’s image with text (think 2009 Grammy posters). Pick a portrait that offers good contrast—a photo that’s very dramatic and dark probably won’t work as well. I’ve had the best success with straight-on head and shoulder shots, but again, feel free to experiment with all types of photos. For the best results, choose a photo that has a light background (or select the background around the person and make it lighter).
National Atlas home page The National Map is now offering a collection of small-scale datasets that can be downloaded for free. Although the 1997-2014 Edition of the National Atlas of the United States was retired in September 2014, The National Map recognizes the importance of continuing to make a collection of the small-scale datasets, originally developed for the National Atlas, available to users. Small-scale maps have an advantage over large-scale maps when there is a need to show a large area in a single view. This makes small-scale maps an ideal solution for scientists, decision-makers, and planners needing to provide a geographical context for the research projects. Generally, certain geographical and feature details found in large-scale maps are limited or omitted in small-scale maps. The choice of small-scale maps always comes down to the intended use of the final map.
Wingdings character set and equivalent Unicode characters Wingdings font should not be used in Web pages. This page is not a demonstration of how to use Wingdings font; it provides a warning of the problems that it causes, and shows how to use Unicode instead. Microsoft include an OpenType version of their Wingdings font with Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2000. An older TrueType version was supplied with Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows NT. A resource-fork TrueType version was supplied with versions of Mac OS 9 that had Internet Explorer pre-installed as the default Web browser. For Windows, browsers such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Netscape 4 and Safari that are not standards-compliant allow non-Unicode fonts such as Wingdings to be specified in HTML or CSS, to enable additional special characters to be displayed.
Design a Colorful Retro Futuristic Poster in Photoshop The theme of retro futurism combines digitally created graphics and abstract shapes with distressed and aged textures, giving that cool mix of old and new. Let’s take a look at how to create our own bright and colourful retro futuristic poster in Photoshop, using dynamic lines, vibrant gradients and rough textures to build up the design layer after layer. The design we’ll be building is made up of a range of abstract shards that spread across the page at 45 degree angles. As each layer is overlapped with various gradients and blending modes the design soon starts to develop a cool and vibrant futuristic theme as the colours interact with each other.
