Free, Open Source Modular Synth Software Lets You Create 70s & 80s Electronic Music—Without Having to Pay Thousands for a Real-World Synthesizer In the past decade or so, the analog modular synth—of the kind pioneered by Robert Moog and Don Buchla—has made a comeback, creating a booming niche market full of musicians chasing the sounds of the 70s and 80s. These inscrutable racks of patchbays, oscillators, filters, etc. look to the non-initiated more like telephone operator stations of old than musical instruments. But the sounds they produce are sublime and otherworldly, with a saturated warmth unparalleled in the digital world. But while analog technology may have perfected certain tones, one can't beat the convenience of digital recording, with its nearly unlimited multi-tracking capability, ability to save settings, and the ease of editing and arranging in the computer. Only the most finely-tuned ears, for example, can hear the difference between the highest-quality digitally modeled guitar amplifiers and effects and their real-world counterparts in the mix. The Health Benefits of Drumming: Less Stress, Lower Blood Pressure, Pain Relief, and Altered States of Consciousness Drumming—from tablas to tympani to djembes—is universal, so much so, says author Sayer Ji, that it seems “hard-wired into our biological, social and spiritual DNA.” Drumming may well be “an inborn capacity and archetypal social activity.” But many modern people have become alienated from the drum. We outsource drumming to professionals, and machines. In addition to anthropological evidence noting the centrality of drumming to human culture, abundant research has demonstrated its potential for personal healing. The evidence-based approach to group drumming’s socio-physical benefits should sway skeptics, even those likely to see drum circle therapy as some kind of hippy-dippy woo. While much of the writing about group drumming as therapy stresses more intangible, mystical benefits, no small amount of data suggests that the physical effects are measurable and significant. via Reset Related Content: The Neuroscience of Drumming: Researchers Discover the Secrets of Drumming & The Human Brain

A YouTube Channel Completely Devoted to Medieval Sacred Music: Hear Gregorian Chant, Byzantine Chant & More The artists of medieval Europe, at least according to the impression we get in history class, gave far less consideration to the world around them than the world above. Historians argue about how much that general attitude hindered the improvement of the human lot during those ten centuries or so, but even we denizens of the 21st century can feel that the imaginations of the Middle Ages did tap into something resonant — and in the domain of music quite literally resonant, since the sacred songs of that time still create a properly otherworldly sonic atmosphere when they echo through cathedrals. If you don't happen to live near a cathedral, you can experience something of that atmosphere through your headphones anywhere you happen to be with Callixtus, a channel on the not normally sacred space of Youtube. How did this still-haunting style of music come about? via Aleteia and @dark_shark Related Content: David Byrne: How Architecture Helped Music Evolve

Tecnología musical con software libre Alterations (Toop / Day / Beresford / Cusack) w/ special guests Elaine Mitchener + Satoko Fukuda + Max Eastley + John Butcher + Lee Patterson + Blanca Regina ← Cafe OTO David Toop has been developing a practice that crosses boundaries of sound, listening, music and materials since 1970. This encompasses improvised music performance, writing, electronic sound, field recording, exhibition curating, sound art installations and opera. It includes eight acclaimed books, including Rap Attack (1984), Ocean of Sound (1995), Sinister Resonance (2010), Into the Maelstrom (2016), Flutter Echo (2019) and Inflamed Invisible: Writing On Art and Sound 1976-2018 (2019). Briefly a member of David Cunningham’s pop project The Flying Lizards in 1979, he has released fourteen solo albums, from New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments on Brian Eno’s Obscure label (1975) and Sound Body on David Sylvian’s Samadhisound label (2006) to Entities Inertias Faint Beings (2016) and Apparition Paintings (2021). His 1978 Amazonas recordings of Yanomami shamanism and ritual were released on Sub Rosa as Lost Shadows (2016).

Sacred Paws - EP Launch show + Bamboo + Steve Beresford / Verity Susman / Matthew Simms ← Cafe OTO Launch party for fantastic guitar/drums duo Sacred Paws ahead of their debut EP on Rock Action Records - '6 Songs'. Support comes from Bamboo – the pairing of Rachel Horwood of Trash Kit/Halo Halo and Nick Carlisle of Peepholes/Don’t Argue – and a new trio of Steve Beresford (electronics), Verity Susman (saxophone), and Matthew Simms (modular synthesizer). “Undisputed band of the night are Sacred Paws, comprising Eilidh of Golden Grrls and Skeleton Bob on drums, and Rachel from Electrelane affiliates Trash Kit on guitar. Raw Soweto high-life riffs and rolling Afrobeat grooves are filtered through post-punk sass and ramshackle K Records charm. It’s an utterly joyous sound, the duo trading giddy melodies and righteous chants over febrile rhythms and chunky, infectious guitar. Judging by the dancing feet and smiling faces, Glasgow has a new favourite band.” – The List Launch party for fantastic guitar/drums duo Sacred Paws ahead of their debut EP on Rock Action Records - '6 Songs'.

Keiji Haino / Steve Noble – 28.2.12 ← Cafe OTO While Haino theatrically sweeps between bleak and uninhibited paranoia, deep-level zoning and bluesy contemplation, Noble's huge set up and graceful approach brings space, light and shade - so much so that at one point Haino unplugs his guitar and picks up a small wooden flute. Dynamic, dramatic and surprisingly uplifting. Keiji Haino / electric guitar, feedback, flute Steve Noble / a lot of percussion Recorded by John Chantler on Tuesday 28th February 2012. Filmed by Andy Newcombe.
