Creating a visual “fingerprint” for film - thesis project by Frederic Brodbeck #processing Cinemetrics is the thesis project of Frederic Brodbeck‘s at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), Den Haag. It aims to create a visual “fingerprint” for film using the editing structure, color, speech and motion. Different characteristics are analysed using python and openCV, and data visualised using a custom Processing application. Being someone who really enjoys movies and cinema, I always notice little things about the style of a movie, so film and its characteristics were an interesting starting point for this project. Tools for disassembling video files into their components (video, audio, subtitles, etc.) and processing them (shot detection, average shot length, motion measuring, color palettes), as well as an interactive application to generate and compare different movie fingerprints are all available as code here. In preparation for LAWDI 2012, I wrote a post called “Linked Data: A Theory,” pondering the concepts behind Linked Data, but it was clear to me from the beginning that I needed a more sturdy vocabulary and concrete skills in order to put these ideas into practice. En base al elevado volumen de tráfico de las plataformas más utilizadas, lo obvio sería pensar que podemos contar con los dedos de una, o a lo máximo, dos manos el número de las redes sociales que utilizamos para relacionarnos. Pero, la realidad es tozuda y viene a confirmar que la naturaleza de las personas es diversa.

The data.bnf.fr project uses data which have been created in various formats such as Intermarc for the catalogue of printed books, XML-EAD for archives inventories and Dublin Core for the digital library. Such data is automatically gathered, modelled and enriched and are published in the RDF semantic web language. Part of the data is matched with external value vocabularies: id.loc.gov for languages and nationalities, dewey.info for subjects, DCMI type for document types. Data What is Linked Data? The Semantic Web is a Web of Data — of dates and titles and part numbers and chemical properties and any other data one might conceive of. The collection of Semantic Web technologies (RDF, OWL, SKOS, SPARQL, etc.) provides an environment where application can query that data, draw inferences using vocabularies, etc. However, to make the Web of Data a reality, it is important to have the huge amount of data on the Web available in a standard format, reachable and manageable by Semantic Web tools. To achieve and create Linked Data, technologies should be available for a common format (RDF), to make either conversion or on-the-fly access to existing databases (relational, XML, HTML, etc). What is Linked Data Used For? Linked Data lies at the heart of what Semantic Web is all about: large scale integration of, and reasoning on, data on the Web. Setting Data Free With Gapminder Last month Hans Rosling, the Swedish global health professor, statician and sword swallower released a desktop version of Gapminder World, his mesmerizing data visualization tool. Named one of Foreign Policy's top 100 global thinkers in 2009, the information design visionary co-founded Gapminder.org with his son and daughter-in-law aiming to make the world's most important trends accessible and digestible to global leaders, policy makers and the general public. The software they developed, Trendalyzer, (acquired by Google in 2007) translates static numbers into dynamic, interactive bubbles moving through time. The desktop version of Gapminder, which is still in beta, allows you to create and present graphs without an Internet connection.
