You’ll need to head to the Arid Hills for these quests. As soon as you walk in, you’ll spot a pair of vending machines to your left, as well as a New-U pole. The first mission we’ll do in the hills is Scavenger: Sniper Rifle, but we’ve got a ways to go to get there and there are plenty of enemies along the way. The Book Surgeon (15 pieces) Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms. "My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception," he says. "The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. Dettmer is originally from Chicago, where he studied at Columbia College. Update: Read our exclusive interview with the Book Surgeon here. Brian Dettmer's website
Strapping Cameras to Birds of Prey = 150 MPH Dives, 10g Turns, Barrel Rolls, etc (Videos) Soaring With a Unique Point of ViewI just found a couple of great videos filmed by miniature cameras strapped on birds of preys (thank you Reddit!), and while the videos are very cool to watch (the second one is posted below), they reminded me that while not all birds of prey are officially endangered, they face big challenges, like other top predators in the sea and on the ground. The Peregrine Fund has a good explanation of why it is so important to protect birds of prey, and why they are so vulnerable: As predators at the tops of food webs, birds of prey (raptors) are influenced by many factors and processes within nature. Indeed, being at the top of the food chain means that pesticides and other toxins tend to find their way all the way up to birds of prey.

Lucas Ainsworth Design When the State Becomes God, By Lee Penn (All rights reserved, SCP) During World War I, American activist Randolph Bourne had warned, "War is the health of the State."1 His prophecy has proven accurate; the post-1914 years have been an era of total war and the total state. It had seemed that with the fall of the Soviet Union, the state of permanent war, permanent mobilization, and permanent emergency would end. This hope has not been realized. Precedents from the 1790s through World War II Federal power grabs have been a bi-partisan policy, long before the War on Terror. In 1798, the Federal Government passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, in response to the threat of war with France.2 "The Sedition Act made it a criminal offense to print or publish false, malicious, or scandalous statements directed against the U.S. government, the president, or Congress; to foster opposition to the lawful acts of Congress; or to aid a foreign power in plotting against the United States."3 About 25 people were arrested under the law, and 10 were imprisoned.
