it ain’t broke, but This recipe, I admit, is a little gimmicky. It’s reminiscent of an overplayed commercial featuring bad lighting and the latest, greatest idea: the snuggie, for instance (like a blanket, except it has armholes!), or perhaps the clapper (clap on! clap off!). Well, I’m sold. Actually, it was Kevin who was sold, when I made the questionable decision to tip the magazine spread featuring the recipe in his direction. I felt a little bit less sheepish about this chain of events considering that brownies seem to be an exception to the adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But I see absolutely nothing wrong with upping the ante a bit: adding a dollop of mascarpone, to the batter, say, or slathering the top with a thick layer of ganache. So, yes, it seemed that me and my skillet were in well-trod “fixing something that’s not broken” territory. Factor in the circular shape of the brownies (baked in a skillet! Harry Potter Birthday Party My son turned 10 this year, and the last Harry Potter movie came out, so what better way to celebrate than with a Harry Potter birthday party? I got tons of ideas from Pinterest , then I decided what I could make work in my house. The first thing that I made was the sign for "Platform 9 3/4", which I placed by the door (I picked up the file that I printed here -she has TONS of other great printables for a Harry Potter party). My Sign: The next thing on my list...wands for the Wizards! Ollivander's Wand Shop: As you can see, I also made "Hogwarts Completion Certificates, but I will show those later ( I gave them out at the end of the party). As any Harry Potter fan knows, the wizards doesn't choose the wand, the wand chooses the wizard. (birthday boy had to put a spell on his sis!) Now there are lots of ideas for Harry Potter party activities if you google it, but the kids opted to ride four wheelers and play Harry Potter video games. We had a Honeyduke's Sweet Shop: And, Evan's cake: Cards :
Make Your Own Girl Scout Cookies Make Your Own Girl Scout Cookies, Sans The Artificial Ingredients Whether you want to avoid some of the highly-processed ingredients (like trans fats and palm oil) or you just can’t wait for the annual cookie sale, we’ve got some simple ways to make healthier versions of these classic treats. Why Make Your Own Though Girl Scout cookies boxes say “trans-fat free,” the term is officially defined by the FDA as a food that contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving, meaning some varieties — including uber-popular Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs — still contain trace amounts of the fat. The giveaway: Look for “partially-hydrogenated” on the ingredient list. That ingredient list also contains palm oil and preservatives — your homemade ones will just taste better. 2 Recipes, 5 Different Girl Scout Cookies Many of the favorite Girl Scout cookies begin with the same base: The classic shortbread cookie. Golden Snitch Truffles I’ve got 99 problems but a snitch ain’t one. I guess this post is about a year late. The series may technically be over, but I’m having trouble letting go. I originally made these for an HP party right before Deathly Hallows Part II. (Butterbeer, chocolate frogs, treacle tarts, and a few other wizard treats may have also been present). Golden Snitch Truffles Makes 32 Snitches Ingredients* 2 cups (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips (or dark chocolate) 1 cup whipping cream 2 tbs Kahlua or vanilla extract or flavor of choice 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2-1 cup dark chocolate, 60% or higher *I swear I tried to measure everything but inevitably there were unforeseen changes along the way, so these are sort of guesstimates of the amounts I used. Supplies Wax Paper Edible Gold Powder (I used Wilton’s Pearl Dust, about $4) Edible Gold Spray (I used Duff’s Cake Graffiti, $4) Decent paint brush that’s small enough to fit in the Wilton tube Pastry bag or a ziploc Truffles Wings Assembly
Vanilla Pudding Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting Per the requests I got after my last cinnamon roll post, here is the recipe for my tried-and-true vanilla pudding cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting. The vanilla pudding is simply added to the dough to make it extremely soft and pliable – and oh, does it ever. (No surprise, this recipe comes direct from my Aunt Marilyn whose recipes have made a great showing on this blog already.) I made these last week and it confirmed my feelings: I am in love with these cinnamon rolls. The dough is so extremely tender and soft, it will blow your mind, and the cream cheese goodness of the frosting is beyond delicious. Vanilla Pudding Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting Note: to use instant yeast instead of active dry yeast, decrease the yeast amount to 1 1/2 tablespoons instant yeast. Ingredients Rolls: ½ cup warm water 2 tablespoons active dry yeast 2 tablespoons sugar 3 ½ ounce package instant vanilla pudding ½ cup butter, melted 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 6+ cups flour Filling: Frosting: Notes
