The eyes of a creature Forget about BeetleCam and other devices. A British photographer risked his life as he captured these wildlife shots. Jonathan Griffiths held his camera just inches away from tigers, bears and cougars as he took the pictures. (Jonathan Griffiths/Solent) The 32-year-old endured minus 40 degree Celsius temperatures at a Canadian wildlife breeding reserve as he gained the trust of each animal over two or three days. He enticed them with meat – mainly chicken – to photograph them close-up in his 15-month project. ..and in another shot a tiger left condensation on his lens with its breath. The currency trader flew to Canada, where he stayed in a lodge by a wildlife breeding reserve. Jonathan said: “At first I was quite nervous being so close to the animals as I did not know what to expect and they are wild… (Jonathan Griffiths/Solent) My family think I’m a bit nuts and worry about the consequences if something went wrong. The Book Surgeon (15 pieces) Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms. "My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception," he says. "The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. Sadly, once the photograph is taken, Rune removes the installation, the only proof of it’s existence being these images… sort of like waking up from an amazing dream that you could have sworn was real. mental_floss Blog & He Took a Polaroid Every Day, Until the Day He Died I came across a slightly mysterious website -- a collection of Polaroids, one per day, from March 31, 1979 through October 25, 1997. There's no author listed, no contact info, and no other indication as to where these came from. So, naturally, I started looking through the photos. I was stunned by what I found. In 1979 the photos start casually, with pictures of friends, picnics, dinners, and so on. Here's an example from April 23, 1979 (I believe the photographer of the series is the man in the left foreground in this picture): By 1980, we start to figure out that the photographer is a filmmaker. Some days he doesn't photograph anything interesting, so instead takes a photo of the date. Throughout the 1980s we see more family/fun photos, but also some glimpses of the photographer's filmmaking and music. The photographer is a big Mets fan. In the late 1980s we start seeing more evidence that the photographer is also a musician. In 1991, we see visual evidence of the photographs so far.
How To Give Your Photos a Cool Retro Analog Effect Back in the days of analog photography imperfections were part of the job. Colour washes, light leaks, vignettes and blurs were all common problems that appeared during the processing of your film, particularly from cheap cameras such as the Holga, or simply down to human error. While these problems don’t affect digital cameras, we can recreate the cool effects in Photoshop to give our shots that cool lo-fi retro effect. View large scale photograph You don’t have to look far before finding quality examples of old style analog photography. Once you have your photograph of choice, fire up Adobe Photoshop. Add a Curves adjustment layer to begin altering the tones of the image. Change the drop down menu to the Red channel and begin manipulating the curves. Move onto the Green channel, this time increase the green midtones by creating a large flowing bend in the line. Fill a new layer with magenta, then change the blending mode to Soft Light.
