A gloriously melancholy playlist to kick off 2014 compiled with suggestions from the DiS community. For a lot of people January is a time filled with promise. A fresh start. A clean slate. It's not so much the hollow gesture, it's the way this automated new year greeting has become some sort of demand that really gets my goat. To fly in the face of these donut-dodging, joy-stuffed, 30-day detoxers, DiS decided to spend so-called 'Blue Monday' canvassing our community for their favourite "wonderfully miserable" songs. Don't worry, this isn't meant to be some life-changing mixtape, I mean, it's got Spiritualized's 'Broken Heart' which could turn even the world's most chipper chap into a suicide risk. I spend a lot of time wishing that the cassette tape would make a comeback. There was a lot to love about cassettes, not the least of which was making mixtapes. While the phrase “mixtape” is still around, it’s come to mean something different, something other than the long lost tradition of meticulously recording song after song off of albums and the radio in order to make a perfect musical love letter. The art — and make no mistake about it, it is an art — of making a mixtape is lost on a generation that only has to drag and drop to complete a mix. There’s no love or passion involved in moving digital songs from one folder to another. Those “mixes” are just playlists held prisoner inside a device. There was a certain ritual to making a perfect mixtape, one that could take hours to finish (maybe even days, depending on how much you wanted to impress the recipient). It was about so much more than grouping some tunes together. There would be albums strewn about the room.

Un groupe de musicien britannique et de scientifiques, ont tenté de faire le morceau de musique le plus relaxant dans l’histoire de l’homme. Des thérapeutes en sonologie (thérapie par le son) et le groupe anglais de Manchester, Marconi Union, ont créé cette musique, Weightless (en écoute plus bas). Les scientifiques l’ont testé sur 40 femmes et ont trouvé qu’elle était la plus efficace pour se détendre. Elle fonctionne en utilisant des rythmes spécifiques, les tonalités, les fréquences et les intervalles qui détendent irrémédiablement l’auditeur.
