A Wandering Eyre » Discussing Unconference Things at Midwinter ALA has been working hard, as have the divisions, in the past couple of years to incorporate more unconference type things into the schedule at Annual and Midwinter. Up until this point, these things have been special events and, while there are a few, most of them are not recurring. It is time to start thinking of making these “special” things less extraordinary and instead making them “just the way we do awesome things around here”. With that in mind, I am hosting a discussion at the Networking Uncommons at Midwinter on Sunday at 9am. making current unconference offerings less special and more the way we do thingsways to encourage speakers to leave behind traditional sage on the stage presentationsplanning sessions with different formatslinking the virtual and physical conference for a more meaningful experience at bothanything else you want to discuss within this topic –Jane, with apologies to Shel Silverstein

ala midwinter visitor's guide hello. if you are soon coming to dallas for the ala midwinter conference in a couple of weeks, I welcome you to my fair town. I was born and raised in, left, then returned to dallas. as of now, I'm a proud resident of the best zip code in the city, 75226. dallas is sort of a prickly city, not having a particularly tourist-friendly downtown, but it's been trying hard to get better. for those of you staying at the omni (ala hq), I can see your glowing lights from the roof my building. so here, from me to you, are a list of places I love, all within a three-mile radius of the omni. I have tried to feature local/independent establishments, but feel free to add suggestions in the comments. also let me know if you'd like recommendations for any place else. if you enjoy good coffee (and breakfast), please visit oddfellows (in oak cliff) or pearl cup (on ross ave). if you'd like a good dinner (slightly upscale but still reasonable), please visit cedars social on south lamar. again, welcome!
