Doilies Are Stylish: Oyster mittens I wanted a pair of mittens that were a little fussy but not too much, and a little chunkier than the colorwork mittens I had been knitting before but not too much. Then I found this Silk Garden colour (#269), which reminded me of an oyster shell, and I made some ripply mittens: The yarn blooms and becomes a little glossier after washing, and I am pretty pleased with the effect. These are more or less standard mittens, with a feather and fan cuff and slightly modified feather and fan on the back of the hand. (The palms are plain.) Crochet Central Operation Marine Corps Kids « Marine Corps Family Foundation 700,000 children in this country have a parent at war. When babies are born to deployed troops, it’s doubly hard for both mom and da d. The dad must wait weeks or months to meet his newest child. The mom has responsibilities of both parents, juggling the exhausting care of a newborn while meeting the needs of other children without the help of her husband. Please Visit the Marine Corps Kids Blog site to learn more. A recent e-mail from a young mother who delivered her first child – a girl – while her husband was deployed, describes how this program makes a difference: I received your gift yesterday. We were able to start the project with a donation from the VA Mortgage Center for postage.

Teeny Tiny Flowers This is a very simple little crochet pattern for small five-petalled flowers and leaves.I love making crochet flowers. I love the decorative nature of them, that they can be used to embellish all sorts of crochet, knit or fabric garments and objects. They can be used to decorate a bag, a hat, a cushion, a coat. In rows, in little posies, or randomly scattered. First a word about yarn thickness and hook size.Below are three flowers made using the exact same pattern, but with different yarns and hooks. On the left, Rowan DK handknit cotton, on the recommended 4mm hook.In the middle, the same Rowan cotton, but on a 3.5mm hook.On the right, Rowan DK wool on a 3.5mm hook. I prefer to use a slightly smaller hook size than usual so that the flowers come out tighter/smaller (as in the middle flower). The pattern is written in UK terms, the stitches as follows :: sl st :: insert hook, yarn over, pull the loop back through the stitch, then through the loop on your hook. For US peeps: UK dc = US sc
