I start by looking at your underlying motivation to learn French, your surrounding environment, your learning strategies, and your L1 (mother tongue). Compare someone who is in France speaking with the locals and getting as much practice as possible versus somebody learning on their own or learning only through a French class. Compare someone who REALLY wants to learn French versus someone being forced to learn it for college credits. Compare someone who speaks a romance language, like French, versus someone who doesn’t.
