Smartphones as Learning Tools – UW Bothell Learning Technologies Blog Last Spring, we posted an article about using cell phones in the classroom. Nearly every student, staff and faculty member has one, and in the past years there’s been a push to harness the technology for educational enhancement. But now an even more advanced mobile technology is becoming ubiquitous–smartphones. There are now 91.4 million smartphones in the United States, and many students are the proud owners of these devices. In addition to standard cell phone features of calling and texting, smartphones make it easy to browse the web, play games, check the news, study for a test, and much more all thanks to different applications that can be installed on the phone. With technology constantly advancing, it may be only a matter of time until cell phones are replaced completely by smartphones. Detrás de estas tendencias hay una inquietud por el formato tradicional del aula, comandada por el método simultáneo (un docente enseñando a todos al mismo ritmo) bajo la impronta nacional de un currículum fijo. Las experiencias más innovadoras están probando el trabajo por proyectos, experimentos, investigaciones o misiones, especialmente en el nivel secundario. Las pedagogías alternativas ya lo propusieron y aplicaron en diversos contextos desde hace al menos 150 años. Parece ser la hora de hacer políticas educativas que favorezcan las experiencias de docentes y alumnos, el aprendizaje en la práctica, el descubrimiento, el trabajo en equipos, la ruptura de los horarios fijos, las clases expositivas y graduadas. Aprendizaje móvil: M-Learning El último monográfico de SCOPEO: M-Learning, en España, Portugal y América Latina describe de forma bastante exhaustiva el estado actual de la cuestión referente al aprendizaje móvil, mobile learning o m-learning y su lectura ha impulsado este artículo. Cogs of the Cognitive Processes I began to think about the triangular shape of Bloom's Taxonomy and realized I thought of it a bit differently.Since the cognitive processes are meant to be used when necessary, and any learner goes in and out of the each level as they acquire new content and turn it into knowledge, I created a different type of image that showcased my thoughts about Bloom's more meaningfully.Here is my visual which showcases the interlocking nature of the cognitive processes or, simply, the "Cogs of the Cognitive Processes". How do we connect the Bloom’s Taxonomy with the iPad? Following inDave Mileham and Kelly Tenkeley’s footsteps of assigning iPad apps to the different levels of the Bloom’s Taxonomy, I created the following table with apps that I have tested out and am recommending. (Click to see a larger version of the image) In order to make the cut, the app had to fulfill the criteria (from Wikipedia and according to the Blooming Orange’s verbs) set out for each level. You will notice that several apps that are in the same app category (ex. screencasting: ShowMe, ScreenChomp and ExplainEverything) are represented on different levels of the Bloom’s. I want to encourage/challenge you, to take a look at the iPad apps on YOUR iPad and to categorize these apps with the different thinking levels and THEN take the next step to SHARE your list with other educators.
