Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1% It’s no use pretending that what has obviously happened has not in fact happened. The upper 1 percent of Americans are now taking in nearly a quarter of the nation’s income every year. In terms of wealth rather than income, the top 1 percent control 40 percent. Their lot in life has improved considerably.

Slacktivism Slacktivism (sometimes slactivism or slackervism) is a portmanteau of the words slacker and activism. The word is usually considered a pejorative term that describes "feel-good" measures, in support of an issue or social cause, that have little or no practical effect other than to make the person doing it take satisfaction from the feeling they have contributed. The acts tend to require minimal personal effort from the slacktivist. The underlying assumption being promoted by the term is that these low cost efforts substitute for more substantive actions rather than supplementing them, although this assumption has not been borne out by research.[1] The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS describes the term "slacktivist", saying it "posits that people who support a cause by performing simple measures are not truly engaged or devoted to making a change".[4]

Daft Punk: The Samples With the release of Daft Punk ‘s much hyped new long player ‘Random Access Memories’ imminent, we thought it a perfect time to revisit the excellent sample material that has provided the backbone to some of the duo’s best loved hits. We have put together a special mixtape comprising some of our favorites: disco, funk, rock and more. Our rundown of the tracks featured follows: 1. The Sherbs – We Ride Tonight (sampled in Daft Punk and DJ Falcon – Contact) When Daft Punk announced last month that the only sample to feature on their new studio album would be of 1980s Australian rockers The Sherbs (formerly known as the Sherbet ) the internet was a buzz with curiosity as to what the rest of the album, uncharacteristically sample free, would sound like.

Support flotilla, with all its fa... JPost - Opinion - Columnists For political reasons, I wouldn’t go on the flotilla that’s trying to sail from Greece to Gaza, nor would I board the planned “air flotilla” to Ben-Gurion Airport on Friday. But for weightier political reasons, I hope the people on the boats make it to Gaza and those on the planes get through to the West Bank (even though it’s understood Israel won’t let them). As a Zionist, I don’t identify with these activists. But as a hater of the occupation, I support what they’re doing now. My heart isn’t really with them - but my head is. To start with the cons of the flotilla movement, I doubt there’s a person aboard who thinks Israel should remain a Jewish state.

The brave new world of slacktivism Last week, The Globe and Mail ran an article on the history of “slacktivism” (the G&M piece seems to have grown out of an interview I did with CBC's Spark a few weeks ago on the same subject). "Slacktivism" is an apt term to describe feel-good online activism that has zero political or social impact. It gives those who participate in "slacktivist" campaigns an illusion of having a meaningful impact on the world without demanding anything more than joining a Facebook group. Remember that online petition that you signed and forwarded to your entire contacts list? That was probably an act of slacktivism...

Articles: Take Me Seriously: Why Pussy Riot Matter Photos by Lindsay Zoladz taken at the Solidarity Concert for Pussy Riot in Washington, D.C., on August 10 It's the kind of thing that happens every day of the week all over the world in dingy warehouses, church basements, and beer-stinking loft spaces: a bunch of people gathering to hear some sloppy, ear-ringingly loud music. Except someone from the Associated Press is filming this particular punk show. And the PA is pointed at the Russian Embassy across the street. China Releases a Blogger, Ran Yunfei, With Conditions The blogger, Ran Yunfei, 43, returned to his home in Sichuan Province late Tuesday from a detention center in the city of Dujiangyan, his wife, Wang Wei, said by telephone. She declined to describe the conditions of his release, but a friend and human rights defense lawyer who spoke with him, Pu Zhiqiang, said Mr. Ran would be subject to six months of “residential restriction” during which his movements and his ability to speak or write publicly would be curtailed. Rights advocates said the authorities were likely to drop the charges if Mr. Ran did not resume advocating political reform.
