The Noob Guide to Online Marketing (With Giant INFOGRAPHIC)
“Get me to page 1 of Google, while emailing our customers a bi-weekly newsletter, engaging influencers on Twitter, maintaining a captive Facebook audience, capturing new leads, and putting out 3 blog posts a week.” Harsh? Yes. Familiar? Everything a Non-Marketer Needs to Take a Business from Zero to Hero Online What you are about to read might be a little shocking. Let the story and the course begin... A typical marketing storyline You’ve just been put in charge of “Internet marketing” at your new sweatshop startup (don’t worry, I live there too - replete with rusty sewing machines and fake Nike stitching patterns). It’s much more than just one job. With that in mind, I’d like to present you with: A 15,000,000 pixel infographic (that’s fifteen million colored squares, which could make it the largest infographic in history). It takes a lot of work - although not as much as writing all this - so no whining please. Social media marketing (SMM) Email marketing Lead Generation Analytics

5 Things That Really Smart People Do | Inc. 5000 Most people don't really think much about how they learn. Generally you assume learning comes naturally. You listen to someone speak either in conversation or in a lecture and you simply absorb what they are saying, right? Not really. In fact, I find as I get older that real learning takes more work. But the need for learning never ends, so your desire to do so should always outweigh your desire to be right. 1. You know the one I am talking about. 2. If you can't quiet the inner voice, then at least use it to your advantage. 3. Some people are naturally curious and others are not. 4. No concept or theory comes out of thin air. 5. Often people shut out learning due to the person delivering the material. Beyond Blog Posts - A Guide to Innovative Content Types The author's posts are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz. Producing great content is a high ROI activity. Too often however I see people focused on producing individual pieces of content aiming to get links and attention. I like to think that instead of focusing on pieces of content - you should focus on the content platform. Q&A Content Q&A content is getting some explosive growth recently - primarily down to Silicon Valley's love affair with Quora. 1) A quora thread which is answered by a Google employee with amazing details on why Wave failed and how it was developed in the first place: 2) The ever excellent Stackoverflow, with so many awesome questions it's difficult to pick one. 3) Of course, we practice what we preach at SEOmoz and we are pumping out some awesome Q&A content. 4) The Reddit AMA sub-reddit is my favourite daily-read and has some super awesome threads. 12 Things Killer Employees Do Before Noon A recent study published in an American Psychological Association journal, Emotion, suggests that early birds are generally happier than night owls. More than 700 respondents, ranging from ages 17 to 79, were surveyed and asked about their emotional state, health, and preferred time of day. Self-professed "morning people" reported feeling happier and healthier than night owls. Researchers hypothesize that one of the reasons could be because society caters to a morning person's schedule. It's certainly true that the working world does. Do you want to be more like them? 1. [In Pictures: 10 Ways to Boost Work Productivity.] 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Social curation finds an audience: Pearltrees reaches 10M pageviews With its slick visual interface for bookmarking content, Pearltrees is unique enough that I’ve been both impressed and slightly skeptical that a mass audience will actually use it. But it looks like the site has found plenty of users. The French startup just announced that it crossed two big milestones in March: It has more than 100,000 users curating links, and it received more than 10 million pageviews. When you share links on Pearltrees, they show up as little circles called Pearls. Pearltrees launched in December 2009, and it recently enhanced the social aspect with a new teams feature that lets groups of people create Pearltrees collaboratively. Pearltrees has raised 3.8 million euros in funding.

20 creative guerilla marketing campaigns We are so overwhelmed with advertising everywhere that it becomes hard for creative agencies to make ads that stand out. Guerilla advertising is a great way to make unusual, surrealistic visuals and situations that passers by will remember. Here is a selection. 1. The bench that turns you into a walking advertisement if you are wearing short shorts. 2. Pretty clever, the urinal that stands out. 3. Seen in New York, how would you not go grab a coffee there? 4. I would be curious to know how many people actually notice this ad. 5. Enter the shark, a cool optical illusion for this National Geographic ad on a bus. 6. Cool idea to promote the movie “The day after tomorrow”, it gives the illusion that NYC has been submerged by the waters. 7. Feels good not to be in the same category as the big boys. 8. Small but poweful, I think the message just got across the bridge. 9. Unmissable ad, I’m sure all the bowlers that went there remembered it. 10. 3M security glass 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17.

10 Reasons Your Social Marketing Initiative Will Fail A 2012 study by the Social Media Examiner found that 83% of marketers said social media is important to their businesses. These folks have almost all initiated social marketing initiatives to connect with customers, prospects, and influencers via social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, and LinkedIn. But if these initiatives are so important, why do so many of them fail to bring value to their organizations, while siphoning valuable resources that could be used better elsewhere? Here are ten main reasons a social initiative falls flat on its face: Poorly-defined (or no) success metrics or goals. Curation - The Third Web Frontier Posted by Guest Writer - January 8, 2011 Here is a guest article by Partice Lamothe - CEO of Pearltrees (Pearltrees is a consulting client of SVW.) This is a lightly edited version of "La troisième frontière du Web" that appeared in the magazine OWNI - Digital Journalism - March 2010. The article argues that the founding pricinciples of the Internet are only now being implemented and that the next frontier is in organizing, or curating, the Internet. By Patrice Lamothe Everyone realizes that the web is entering a new phase in its development. One indication of this transition is the proliferation of attempts to explain the changes that are occurring. Although these explanations are both pertinent and intriguing, none of them offers an analytical matrix for assessing the developments that are now underway. The "real time web," for example, is one of the clearest and most influential trends right now. In contrast, other explanations are far too broad to serve any useful purpose.

6 Simple Rituals To Reach Your Potential Every Day It’s Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. Two San Francisco entrepreneurs are pitching their ventures to potential investors today. They’d both agree that this is one of the most important days of their lives. This is the story of Jane and Joe... Jane was up until 4 a.m. putting the final touches on her deck. Joe, on the other hand, went to sleep last night at 11 p.m., as he does most nights of the week. Which entrepreneur would you bet on? And, which entrepreneur most closely resembles you? Jane and Joe are fictional characters but having been immersed in the world of startups in both New York and San Francisco, I see a lot of Janes. This past weekend I had the opportunity to speak with my friend Mike Del Ponte, who resembles the character of Joe. "Every day I need physical energy, mental clarity, and emotional balance to tackle everything that comes my way," Mike said. Here are the six simple rituals he uses to perform at his highest, which you too can begin implementing right away: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Aggregation Is Not Curation - There Is A Big Difference Posted by Tom Foremski - November 2, 2010 Curation is becoming an increasingly important term and for good reason: the online world is increasingly messy, muddled and full of blind alleys. Search used to be the best way to navigate online but today it is only one part of an Internet user's dashboard. Blekko, the recently launched search engine tries to provide a context for search terms but it's still not curation but aggregation So what is curation? Here is my definition: Curation is a person or persons, engaged in the act of choosing and presenting things related to a specific topic and context. An example of curation: the San Francisco De Young museums is exhibiting post-impressionist masterpieces from the Musée d'Orsay's permanent collection. Aggregation is the collection of as many things that can be found related to a topic. Aggregation would be a collection of any or all, post-impressionist masterpieces from Musée d'Orsay's permanent collection. - Pearltrees is sharable and embeddable.

Google+ Testing Social Sharing Bar Google is testing a social side bar on certain websites, allowing users to chat directly on the page and opening up the stage for a bigger advertising stream. TVGuide.com is among the first websites to tout the new social bar, according to TheNextWeb. Notifications and sharing options — such as posting to Google+ — are positioned to the right, while the left is dedicated to page content. The news comes just six months after Google acquired social platform Meebo, and it was reported staffers would be joining the Google+ team. Google said the Meebo bar would go a series of "improvements and new features" in the upcoming months, and this is likely what we're looking at now. Google has not yet responded to a request for comment. Although the company actually shut down most of Meebo's services soon after the acquisition — including its mobile apps, messenger capabilities and widgets — it said it would keep its social bar in business.
