Touchscreen improvements for XP-based UMPCs Before Vista became one of Microsoft’s UMPC hardware requirements, the company’s operating system of choice was Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. Without it, manufacturers (and users) weren’t able to preinstall the Microsoft Touch Pack, a software suite exclusive to UMPCs that includes DialKeys and a handful of other applications designed to enhance the touchscreen experience. But did you know that you don’t really need an "official" UMPC to take advantage of some of what the Touch Pack has to offer? It’s true. TI is actually just a simple one-click utility that pulls together a group of settings already present in Windows that make interacting with a small touchscreen more finger-friendly. Here’s what all the clicking can get you: Wider scrollbars that are easier to manipulate with your fingers.Larger screen text to reduce eyestrain and enhance "tap-ability." The settings can be implemented in any order and in any combination. Widen scrollbars. Enlarge text. Open items with single taps.

Mobile Apps Must Die By Scott Jenson - September 24, 2011 I've written previously that the history of mobile has been a long, painful process of copying desktop computers and then sheepishly realizing that it just doesn't quite work right. This is actually the way of all progress, not just in technology. Art and music follow a similar pattern of copy, extend, and finally, discovery of a new form. Mobile apps are clearly successful and in some cases, very profitable. Too much troubleThe problem with apps, and by this I mean native apps that must be downloaded to your phone, is that they are just becoming too much trouble to organize and maintain. By itself, this issue clearly doesn't doom apps, but it does show an ever increasing problem. This is reminiscent of the early days of the web when Yahoo had a fixed hierarchy of websites that became more and more difficult to keep up as the web exploded. The UX golden rule: Value > PainThere is a subtle force at work here.
