How to Start a Small Permaculture Tree Nursery Recently I attended a farm forestry course with David Holmgren and Darren J. Doherty, a subject I’d like to address today. To even start a farm forestry operation, or even a permaculture orchard, you’ll need to source a huge number of trees from somewhere. I crunched a few numbers and browsed the relevant websites: it seems that small bare-root trees will cost, on average, $20 or more, an amount that will soon add up. I realised that, even excluding overseeding and site preparation, I would need to pay around $20k/acre for my permaculture orchard. It wasn’t until recent visit to my mentor, an experienced plant propagator, that I came upon a way to grow $1000+ worth of trees for less than $100.

ROCKET STOVE FOR HEATING YOUR SURVIVAL SHELTER! So most of us have seen the typical little "rocket stoves" that efficiently cook food in the outdoors using very little fuel. You load twigs and sticks into the bottom side of the unit and the heat rises up the chimney and concentrates at the chimney opening where you can take advantage of that heat concentration by putting a kettle or a pot or pan on for boiling water or cooking. They typically look something like this:

Build your own biodome As I said before I would love to build a greenhouse on my garden plot, but it is not allowed, which I think is a bit silly, after all it is a garden, a place where we grow all sorts of vegetables, and a greenhouse would be a great help. Years ago, when I still lived in Ireland, I helped a friend of mine, Sean, to build a simple greenhouse, or more precisely, a tunnel. We put up a structure made of metal pipes that were bend in a half circle, and that we covered with clear plastic. Sean found it hard to find the right type of plastic, but finally he got something which was the right size, and we managed to build this tunnel.

Strategies and Techniques In this lesson you will learn: What a strategy and a technique are and how they can help you in site design Nine areas to look at when creating and implementing a site design Strategies and techniques for each of the nine areas 1. Natural systems Natural systems, such as forests, wetlands, and streams, perform vital functions for us, and preserving them gives us multiple yields. Strategies: Insect Hotels Insect Hotels Provide a home to pollinators and pest controllers. Tidy gardens, lawns and lack of dead wood, mean less and less habitat for wild bees, spiders and ladybugs. A wildlife stack can harbor numerous beneficial insects and amphibians. This habitat was made up entirely of recycled materials, the support is made up of old pallets. 33 Tips: Lawn To Permaculture Food Forest: Booklet Waking Times Does the idea of getting fresh, nutritious food right out in front of you kitchen door sound like a good idea in these turbulent times? A growing movement to reclaim, restore, and re-localize our relationship to food is happening all around us, and you can participate by re-thinking what you do with the under-utilized space outside of your home. The manicured, grassed, perennially green American lawn is a symbol of a passing era when people had little understanding of how the developing industrialized food system could do them harm by overuse of pesticides, anti-biotics and herbicides, by depletion the soil, and by genetic modification of food crops. Rather than acquiescing to the health tyranny of modern food production, today’s forward-thinking citizens and rebels are re-developing the model for the American lawn, and bringing forth a new kind of revolution… an edible one.
