Aviation Week's AviationNow.com Flightradar24.com - Live Flight Tracker! How Air Traffic Control Works" During peak air travel times in the United States, there are about 5,000 airplanes in the sky every hour. This translates to approximately 50,000 aircraft operating in our skies each day. How do these aircraft keep from colliding with each other? The task of ensuring safe operations of commercial and private aircraft falls on air traffic controllers. When you think about air traffic control, the image of men and women in the tower of an airport probably comes to mind. Airspace and Air Traffic Control The United States airspace is divided into 21 zones (centers), and each zone is divided into sectors. The air traffic control system, which is run by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has been designed around these airspace divisions. Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC) - The ATCSCC oversees all air traffic control. Some pilots of small aircraft fly by vision only (visual flight rules, or VFR).

B-52 still 'BUFF' at 50 This month, the B-52, which made its maiden flight when Harry Truman was president, celebrates its 50th birthday. That heady milestone is only a marker for middle age, however. The bomber, whose lifetime spans 11 presidents, four wars and nearly every technological leap of the jet age, is still a vital part of the Air Force fleet. It is scheduled to fly until 2040. "It is quite a remarkable aircraft," observes Wayne Thompson, an Air Force historian in Washington, D.C. Though the youngest B-52 in today's Air Force fleet is 41 years old, the giant bomber is anything but a Cold War relic. Linked to special operations soldiers on the ground by laptop computers and satellite relays, B-52 crews flew higher than commercial passenger jets to drop their payloads — satellite-guided bombs aimed at Taliban and al-Qaeda troops who could neither hear nor see the origin of their destruction. The B-52 is to bombers what Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., is to U.S. senators. Ugly, fat and ageless Air Force Lt.
