FedStats Second Sight announces milestone in groundbreaking retinal implant trial February 20, 2008 It has to be among the most powerful examples of the miraculous potential of modern science and technology - restoring sight to the blind. Following approval from the US FDA last year, Second Sight Medical Products Inc has now announced that enrollment is complete for the first phase of clinical trials on a system that restores a basic level of sight to sufferers of retinal eye diseases. Enrollment at key European sites also underway. The image captured by the camera on the glasses is sent to a video processor which converts the image to an electronic signal and sends it to the transmitter on the sunglasses. The system is designed to treat blindness caused by Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a group of inherited eye diseases that affect the retina. Internationally, the Argus II study began in Mexico in the fall of 2006 at Centro de Retina Medica y Quirurgica, SC, Centro Medico Puerta de Hierro, CUCS, Universidad de Guadalajara (Guadalajara, Jal.).

The $350 Electric Commuter Bike I've been testing the E-Zip 2008 Trailz bike by Currie Technologies. This electric bike is quite inexpensive -- other electric bikes range in price from $700 up to $3000 in the U.S. For half the price, this is a solid bike with good range and power. My bike arrived partly-assembled in a box. It took me about an hour to attach the seat, front wheel and pedals. Using the electric motor on this bike is simple -- once you've started pedaling, you can turn the throttle, and the motor kicks in, giving you an immediate boost. I've found that the range of a fully-charged battery is about 10 miles -- that's if you make liberal use of the electric assist. If you use this bike for a commute that is 20 miles or less, you could definitely arrive at the office without breaking a sweat. So while bike is heavy and lithium-ion batteries would be nice, it's certainly an inexpensive way to enter the world of electric biking. A Capitalist Dream: Company Designs and Maintains Organic Garden In Your Backyard - EcoLocalizer In the U.S. Published on July 1st, 2008 | by Ariel Schwartz Most environmentally aware Americans would love a personal organic vegetable garden, but how many people actually have the time to cultivate one?. Thanks to a San Francisco-based company called MyFarm, Bay Area denizens can pay a weekly fee to have a backyard garden designed and maintained by professionals. Customers choose between a Personal Installation (just enough food for themselves) and an Owner Member Installation (enough food for MyFarm to sell to other members). The company leaves no gardening detail ignored. MyFarm founder Trevor Paque envisions a decentralized urban farm in San Francisco, made up of a network of organic urban vegetable gardens where clients in sunny areas grow tomatoes for those in foggier areas, and those in the foggy parts of town grow broccoli and other cool-weather veggies for those in warmer climes. Amazing Waterproof Coating for electronics The picture tells a thousand words, and the video after the jump tells a thousand more. Golden Shellback is the name of the coating that is applied to these electronics that makes them impermeable to water. From their website: “When applied to clean, moisture free surfaces, such as plastic, copper, aluminum, metal, ceramic, steel, tin or glass, the coating is transparent with excellent weather proofing and anti-corrosion properties. Golden Shellback coating has an excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. Low surface tension values, such as water and oils will bead and drain freely from coated surfaces. Strangely enough, Golden Shellback was created by the Northeast Maritime Institute, which is exactly what it sounds like! via TechEBlog Tagged as: coating, shellback, waterproof

Image: jurvetson The internet is abuzz with news of new electric cars that all seem to be coming out in 2010. It seems like every day we hear more about the Chevy Volt “extended range electric vehicle,” but not so much about what’s available right now. 1. Model: Xebra Price: $11,700 Top Speed / Range: 40 mph / 25 miles Everyone was a little skeptical of Zap after Wired went and exposed a lot of shady doings over there. 2.
