Water Solar Stills: Clean Drinking Water In a situation of survival the Solar Still ( AKA Vapor Still ) can provide a short to medium term source of fresh drinking water from seawater, rivers and ponds. This important and neccessary piece of survival equipment has been used by the military and yachtsmen for many years. Solar radiation is used to distill and collect the drinking water; essential for daily survival both at sea and in deserts. It is lightweight, compact and easy to use with an output of between 500 and 2000cc per day depending upon climatic conditions. DIY: HOW TO DISTILL WATER AT HOME - Prepared For That Distillation is a process of filtering and purifying water, resulting in pure, pH-balanced H-TWO-O. The process consists of: 1) Boiling/evaporating the water, 2) Collecting the water vapor, 3) Cooling it to allow it to condense back into liquid, and then 4) Collecting the liquid. The boiling causes the pure water molecules to evaporate, leaving all impurities behind in the boiling pot. There are various ways to distill water. 1. You can distill water at home. A stoveA large pot (5+ gallons ideally) with a convex (curving out) lid.A smaller bowl that fits into the pot Fill the pot about half way with the water you’d like to distill. The water will turn into steam, and collect on the lid. Another adaption you can make is using glass bottles instead of a bowl to collect your water. 2. These devices extract humidity from the air and convert it into potable water. 3. If you have two bottles available to you and warm sunny weather, you can distill water. 4. 5. Greywater: What is it, and Why is it Awesome? Confession: I'm kind of a simpleton when it comes to plumbing. Only in recent years has it occurred to me to ask questions like, where does toilet water go when I flush? And how is it suddenly replaced with clean water? And sinks, and washing machines, and showers for that matter- what happens to all my own waste water? Is it magic? Since that first realization of my ignorance regarding all things waste water, I've tried my best to learn a little more about plumbing. Enter off-grid water recycling systems! What is greywater? Greywater refers to waste water that is relatively harmless and can thus be reused for a variety of purposes. Usually, the term encompasses dishwater, laundry water and shower water. I got some great biodegradable soaps for Christmas, and am excited to eventually set up my own grey water irrigation system! How is it reused? Greywater is typically used for irrigation- most people direct their grey water into gardens or mulch pits.

How To Build A Solar-Powered Still To Purify Drinking Water The author’s solar still, with one pan in it. The still actually has room for two of these. Note that the glass top is at an angle, allowing the water to flow down to the catch tube. Everyone agrees that water is needed for survival and articles abound for how to find water and purify it for drinking. Normally, the biggest hazards we face from drinking water are microorganisms: bacteria, protozoa and other parasites which can enter our system and make us quite sick. While those biological hazards are important, they aren’t the only thing we can find in our drinking water. Distillation is a simple process, although it can be difficult to accomplish in quantity. The really great thing about distillation is that nothing else evaporates with the water. The problem with distillation is that it is a slow process, which means that heat has to be applied to the water for a long time, so that it can evaporate and be captured. The Healing Power of Rain Water Living amidst nature can be such a beautiful learning experience, one of the lessons we learned while we were living in the countryside was the importance of water. During summer, temperatures would soar up to 42 degrees Celsius (107 Fahrenheit) inside the house and it was even more outside. But the most gruesome challenge was the lack of water; we were living on rain water that collected in the ground. By summer the water well would run dry, changing the entire landscape – trees would loose their leaves or they look all shriveled up, the only time we would hear a bird would be early in the morning or at the time of sunset. We would eagerly await the arrival of monsoons, as that drastically changed the barren landscape to a spectrum of luscious green. Birds display their best shades and sing their finest tunes to attract mates, flowers blossom, butterflies chase each other while dragonflies dart about. Back to my story, in a week after the rains start, the ground water is replenished.

DIY Solar Still How To Make Your Own Distilled Water Make your own distilled water from stream or lake water, salt water, or even brackish, dirty water, using these DIY Solar Still Plans. With just a few basic building materials, a sheet of glass and some sunshine, you can purify your own water at no cost and with minimal effort. Distilled water is not just for drinking, and it’s always worth keeping a few gallons of it on hand. • Always refill the lead-acid batteries used for solar energy systems or automobiles with distilled water • Water delicate plants like orchids with distilled water; minerals and additives like fluoride or chlorine that are present in most tap water can harm plants • Distilled water mixed with antifreeze is recommended for car radiators, as it’s less corrosive • Steam irons become clogged with mineral deposits unless you use distilled water The box is built from 3/4 ” BC-grade plywood, painted black on the inside to absorb heat. THE WONDERS OF WATER by Lawrence Wilson, MD © January 2015, The Center for Development Water is not only the most essential substance next to oxygen for human life. It is also complex, often containing hundreds of dissolved minerals and chemicals. Most water is also “structured” or clustered in complex ways. It is indeed a marvelous substance whose extreme value is often unrecognized. This is the most important part of this article. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Oddly, packaging it in plastic jugs, even the cloudy type of plastic water containers found in the supermarket, does not ruin its properties, although it will add a little contamination to it. Also, I find that running water through copper or steel pipes also does not ruin it, as many health authorities contend. 6. 1. Drinking more than this, by the way, is not as good. Other beverages such as coffee, tea, juices, or others do not tend to hydrate the body nearly as well, and are discussed below. Also, do not drink with meals. 2. 3. A. B. C. D. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 1. 2.
