A+C AZIZ + CUCHER, Text published in Kunstforum, Winter 1996 "The Medium is not the only Message"***The Human Genome project is being touted as the greatest scientific achievement of mankind, surpassing in its significance the discoveries of Newton, Darwin, and Einstein. If biology is made to be but an exclusive function of the genetic code, then it becomes just another field in the study of communications. The current excitement about the development of the technologies of communication seems to be coated in a blind faith in progress that is just as naive as that which our predecessors put in nuclear power and the space age. Flooded with enthusiasm, some people believe that these technologies offer unlimited possibilities for the reconfiguration of the self, predicting even the possibility of an ontological shift in the reality of being. With advances in digital technology and robotics, bioengineering is forging the link between the natural and the artificial.

The Year in Markets - Interactive Graphic Business More in Business » For stocks and commodities, 2008 was a volatile and punishing year. When photography was first invented, its overwhelming power came from the fact that it recorded nature more realistically than any other art form had ever done before. Because of this, people trusted it and believed it portrayed "reality" and "truth". But, just as story telling could portray the "truth" with an accurate accounting of the facts, it could just as easily become fiction.

Interactive: Mapping the World's Friendships Technology bridges distance and borders. Individuals today can keep in touch with their friends and family in completely new ways — regardless of where they live. We explored these international connections through Facebook and found some trends — some predictable, some wholly unexpected, and some still inexplicable. Who can explain the strong link between the Democratic Republic of Congo, one of the poorest countries in the heart of Africa, and Ecuador? The reason the Central African Republic might be good friends with Kazakhstan is likewise mysterious to us. But as we did a little research, some unusual connections become surprisingly clear. 16 Famous Photoshopped Images Throughout History President Abraham Lincoln, circa 1860 This nearly iconic portrait of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln is a composite of Lincoln’s head and the Southern politician John Calhoun’s body.

BANNED IN LONDON This map of London shows the dramatic loss of liberty in public space. In total, there are 435 banned zones in London, within which citizens can be punished for activities that would otherwise be perfectly legal. Together these zones make up around half the area of the capital, and some areas are overlapped by two or three different zones. Zones are not generally marked with signs, but when you cross these invisible lines your normal freedoms are suspended; you can be punished for things which are not, outside of the zone, an offence. Within a dog exclusion zone, you can be fined or prosecuted just for walking your dog. Within a no-leafleting zone, you can be fined or prosecuted for handing out leaflets without a licence.

Reuters Photo Fraud The Reuters Photo Scandal A Taxonomy of Fraud A comprehensive overview of the four types of photo fraud committed by Reuters, August, 2006 Graphic: a complete guide to the medal records of every country at every Olympic Games Now that London 2012 has come to an end, there is ample opportunity to reflect on what has been Great Britain's largest medal haul for more than 100 years. Team GB won 29 golds at these Olympics and our graphic lets you see how that compares with every other Olympiad, including less fruitful Games such as Atlanta 1996 and Montreal 1976, as well as the unassailable heights of London 1908, where Britain won more than half the golds available. The graphic, which allows you to sort by sport, by Games and by nation, also shows that Britain did not have a stellar Olympics in every respect, with our total of three swimming medals being half the total won in the sport in Beijing.
