GROW! A Film About the Next Generation of Young Farmers in Georgia As the average age of farmers in the U.S. continues to raise, young farmers are beginning to sprout up across the nation. The recent documentary GROW!, directed by Christine Anthony and Owen Masterson, showcases the resurgence of young organic farmers in the state of Georgia. The film highlights 20 individuals across 12 farms who have found their way back to the land, whether working on a family-owned farm, buying their own, or, in most cases, using another farmer’s land to grow food for their community. GROW! While we might be tempted to write their farming endeavors off as young, idealistic attempts at a simple life that simply no longer exists, what we get is a picture of hardworking, passionate and, yes, idealistic 20 and 30-somethings who feel called to a “real” job with tangible results. “After the excesses of the 80′s and 90′s there is a sea change of values. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, for a world without hunger Semences : Monsanto achète un spécialiste de la plantation Le groupe agrochimique américain Monsanto a annoncé, ce mercredi 23 mai 2012, l'acquisition d'une société spécialisée dans les technologies de plantation novatrices, Precision Planting, pour un prix pouvant aller jusqu'à 250 millions de dollars. « Precision Planting a une longue histoire d'innovations qui optimisent la performance des planteurs et augmentent le potentiel de rendement, y compris la nouvelle technologie FieldView, qui propose une application conçue pour assurer un suivi de tous les aspects essentiels de la performance de plantation et de l'analyse des données sur les récoltes », explique Monsanto dans un communiqué. Cette activité, qui permet notamment de déterminer la meilleure profondeur et les meilleurs espacements pour planter des semences, va intégrer la branche de Monsanto baptisée « Integrated Farming systems » (systèmes d'agriculture intégrés).

Monsanto rate la cible | Résultats financiers Pour l'exercice fiscal 2013-2014 achevé fin août, le bénéfice net a bondi de 10,4% à 2,74 milliards de dollars soit 5,22 dollars par action hors éléments exceptionnels, alors que les analystes anticipaient 5,21 dollars en moyenne. Au quatrième trimestre de l'exercice, le numéro un mondial des OGM a certes réduit sa perte à 156 millions de dollars, soit -31 cents par action mais Wall Street misait sur -24 cents en moyenne. Le chiffre d'affaires a augmenté de 6,7% à 15,85 milliards de dollars sur l'ensemble de l'exercice et de 19,43% à 2,63 milliards lors des trois derniers mois. Les analystes prévoyaient respectivement 15,68 milliards et 2,42 milliards de dollars en moyenne. Dans le détail, les ventes de semences transgéniques ont augmenté de 3,9% à 10,74 milliards sur l'année et de 16,1% à 1,37 milliard de dollars sur le quatrième trimestre. Mais pour l'exercice fiscal 2014/2015 débuté en septembre, Monsanto s'est montré prudent.
‘Meat Map’ shows global impact of meat we eat | Friends of the Earth Europe The average German consumes over 1,000 animals in their lifetime at a rate of 60kg of meat every year, according to figures released today by Friends of the Earth Germany/BUND. The ‘Fleischatlas 2013’, a detailed ‘meat map’ report on the trends and consequences of European meat consumption, shows the average German consumes 4 cows, 4 sheep, 12 geese, 37 ducks, 46 pigs, 46 turkeys and 945 chickens in their lifetime. This consumption is over twice the meat-intake per person in developing and emerging economies, and over six times as much as in the world’s poorest countries. The report produced with the Heinrich Boell Foundation and Le Monde Diplomatique, reveals that German farms produce around 17% more meat than is actually consumed, and that almost two-thirds of German agricultural land is used to produce feed for livestock. Even though a lot of animal feed is grown domestically, Europe is also shown to be the world’s second-largest importer of soy beans, after China.
Monsanto Earnings Fall 34% as Farmers Reject GMO Crops The biotech giant Monsanto, which is responsible for genetically modifying much of the nation’s and world’s crops, announced that its earnings fell 34% in its first fiscal quarter as South American farmers reject GMO crops. This is even more evidence that the number of individuals and farmers who realize the potential dangers of GMOs is growing. Monsanto’s decline in earnings is also the result of farmers using less acreage for planting corn, reducing demand for the company’s manufactured seeds. What’s more, Monsanto’s revenue fell more than 8% to $2.87bn in the period due to a lower sales of corn seeds and herbicide. It was reported that analysts expected $2.96bn, according to Zacks. Monsanto shares have decreased nearly 3% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has climbed slightly more than 8%. If youi’re invested in Monsanto stock like Bill Gates, who owns hundreds of thousand of Monsanto shares worth about $23 million, it might be time to pull out.
