PostSecret Welcome to Shore Service Dogs - What You Should Know About Getting A Service Dog Having a Service Animal means not only covering the costs associated with it, but caring for the animal on a daily basis. Consider how a dog will fit into your lifestyle: when will you walk the dog? When will you groom the animal? Is there a place to exercise the dog that is accessible to you? How will you feed the dog? Will the other members of your family deal well with the dog? Another important consideration early in this process is both your expectations of a dog and your expectations of a potential agency/individual trainer that you will be working with. Keep in mind though that it is also very important that you realize that this is a living and breathing animal, not a piece of equipment that works flawlessly every time. Selecting an agency can be a difficult process. There seems to be advantages and disadvantages to each of these options. Application Process The application process differs depending on the particular agency. Provider Checklist Question

Make Your Own Salad Dressing Bottled salad dressings are my pet peeve — the majority of them are full of sodium, sugar and other preservatives. Whether you like a vinaigrette or the creamy stuff, you only need a few simple ingredients (and a couple minutes) to make some yourself. Dressing Basics There are endless rows of bottled dressings at the grocery store. Depending on the kind, they are usually high in fat, sugar or both — and they all have too much sodium. You may think it’s wise to opt for the lower-calorie offerings but light and low-fat dressings often have even more sugar to make up for the lack of flavor. To ensure you’re getting real ingredients, homemade is the way to go, but watch those portions. A Simple Vinaigrette Just join some sort of acid, oil and flavorings and — ta-da! For a basic vinaigrette, combine one part acid to two parts oil, but that’s not mandatory. RECIPE: Simple Salad Dressing Creamier Choices Mayo or sour cream make for creamy dressings but the calories coming from fat pile up.

Second Chance Animal Center - Available Dogs You have probably heard it before, someone trying to guess (yes, guess) the breed mix that they just met. Most often that deduction is based upon the appearance of the dog - its size, the length of its tail or shape of the ears, its color or markings, and so on. However, science has shown that the physical appearance of a dog is an unreliable indicator of the breed or breeds it truly is. Without using the advances in DNA testing for dogs, determining what its parentage is by appearance alone is all guess work. To help end the labeling of it could be this or it could be that, Second Chance is working hard to no longer assign those mixed breeds with assumptions or speculation. Instead we are supporting and identifying many of these canines as an American Shelter Dog. So next time you visit the shelter, no need to be so concerned about what breed mix it is or could be, just know that it is an American Shelter Dog because that may be the best breed of all.

SPCA removes 90 dogs from Upper Pittsgrove Township puppy mill - A raid on a Salem County puppy mill led to the removal of 90 dogs - many of which were suffering from skin, eye and dental infections, the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Saturday. The NJSPCA, The Humane Society of the United States, Cumberland County SPCA and Gloucester County Animal Control/Animal Shelter teamed up in the operation at the Upper Pittsgrove Township facility. "I would say that we've been involved in this case for the past 30 to 45 days," NJSPCA spokesman Matt Stanton said Saturday. Eight animal-cruelty complaints had been issued against 73-year-old LouAnn Koval, Stanton said, but authorities felt that removal was the only option left available. The dogs included "dachshunds, hairless and powder puff Chinese crested, Yorkshire terriers and some mixed breeds," the NJSPCA said. "The bottom line," Stanton said, "was that this was a breeder turned hoarder, and she just lost control.

Dawn Scheld, 46, of Middle Township, N.J., was arrested Saturday as police from the New Jersey SPCA seized 57 dogs on her property. Meanwhile, at the Humane Society of Atlantic County, a veterinarian is examining some of the dogs. “It was really bad,” said Humane Society executive director Steven Dash who was at Scheld’s home during the raid. Dash says the outdoor pens for the dogs were not much better. “There was no place for the dogs to go where it was clean and dry,” he said. Col. Scheld’s attorney, Nathan Perry, had no comment on the case Monday. Watch the video… Reported by Ben Simmoneau, CBS 3
