Web Sites - Get Rid of Your Lousy 'About' Page Once and for All Let's be honest for a minute. How many "About" pages have you read that actually got you excited about a business or brand? I'm guessing... not a lot. The more common reactions to "About Us" pages are boredom, impatience, and strong feelings of being almost completely ignored. So why have we been ignoring the quality of this valuable space? Maybe it's because we hate writing about ourselves. Leaving your "About" page in sub-par condition is costing you more than you think. Your 'About' page is not about you Let's get this out in the open right away: Your "About" page isn't about you. Most "About" pages are focused on the writer or company: their story, background, experience, and so on. But it really needs to be focused on the reader: their needs, problems, worries, and questions. Think about it. Are you really concerned about all their achievements, their dreams and goals, and every award they have ever won? Third person was never a good idea Tell them a story Stories are memorable.

LinkedIn launches brand-friendly initiative - Showcase Pages Companies on LinkedIn may now have up to 10 Showcase Pages. These pages differ from Company Pages in that LinkedIn users can now engage with information about one specific brand, product, business unit or business initiative, instead of one, over-arching Company Page. Showcase Pages are all about content and updates can be viewed in a user's newsfeed by Following the Page. "Through Showcase Pages, companies can segment content to distinct audiences who are interested in different aspects of their business. It's a new way to directly engage the right people in the right context," said LinkedIn in their recent announcement. Showcase Pages will gradually roll out worldwide over the coming weeks and, once available, take just a few steps to set up. SketchesApp The Most Effective Tactics for Acquiring Facebook Fans and Twitter Followers Digital marketers do not believe that the most commonly used tactics for acquiring Facebook fans and Twitter followers are very effective in delivering quality community and audience members, according to a recent report from ExactTarget. In the case of Facebook, the two most popular tactics are (1) displaying a Facebook Like button or link on a website (93% use them, but only 46% rate them as effective), and (2) including a Like button or link to a Facebook Page in emails/newsletters (70% use, 35% rate effective). The report was based on data from a survey of 395 digital marketers mainly from the United States. Respondents were asked to first identify the tactics they use to grow their Facebook and Twitter fan bases and then to rate how effective they consider those methods are in producing quality audience members. The survey also polled marketers on the effectiveness of email acquisition tactics. Effective Facebook Tactics

Anyone can use these machines to "start a local recycling centre" Dezeen and MINI World Tour: in our next movie from Eindhoven, Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Dave Hakkens shows us how his Precious Plastic recycling machines work and explains why he made the blueprints freely available online. Hakkens' Precious Plastic project is a set of simple machines for recycling plastic and making new products locally. He says he got the idea for the project after visiting plastic manufacturing companies and discovering that they were reluctant to use recycled plastic. "We recycle just 10% [of waste plastic]," says Hakkens. "I wondered why we recycle so little so I investigated it. The Precious Plastic machines include a plastic shredder, an extruder, an injection moulder and a rotation moulder, which Hakkens made using a combination of new custom-made components and reclaimed parts he found at a scrapyard. "I made these machines based on industrial standards," says Hakkens. However, he says the machines can be used to make a much wider variety of products.
