How to Go Green: In the Community Sustainable living has certainly become a buzz phrase. More and more people are looking at ways to reduce their ecological footprint: driving less, eating less meat, wearing sustainable fashions. As individuals, we are increasingly aware of the impact we have on the planet and our fellow humans. But is greening our own lifestyle enough? By taking the concept of sustainable living beyond the narrow, individualistic approach, we can learn to see our interconnectedness to our environment and its inhabitants. By getting involved in our communities, by talking to our neighbors, by supporting local groups, and by re-imagining where we live, we can green not only our own lifestyles, but our streets, neighborhoods, towns, cities and, ultimately, our societies.

A Book Review by Scott London The fact that the title of this book, The Ecology of Commerce, reads like an oxymoron illustrates how wide the gap has become between the natural world and our commercial lives. Business believes that if it doesn't continue to grow and instead cuts back and retreats, it will destroy itself. Ecologists believe that if business continues its unabated expansion it will destroy the world around it. In this eloquent and visionary book, Paul Hawken describes a third way, a path that is inherently sustainable and restorative but which uses many of the historically effective organizational and market techniques of free enterprise. Central to Hawken's argument are two basic facts: 1) the age of industrialism, as we know it, has come to an end; and 2) we are confronting a global ecological crisis that is considerably more acute than most of us realize.

How might we better connect food production and consumption? - Concepting - Grow your own food, in your apartment If you live in an apartment, it might seem impossible to grow your own food. Think again! As long as you have a porch, a balcony or a window that gets sunlight, you are actually able to grow quite a variety of fruits and vegetables.CONCEPT UPDATED! Okay, so growing pumpkins, corn or zucchini indoors probably isn’t all that feasible. A Thanksgiving Cornucopia of Wrongest Products We could almost throw in the 1000 thread count towel and just admit we’ve been insurmountably topped in the Wrongest Product Awards competition. First came the suggestion from a reader following our nomination of the lighted pillow spied in a local outpost of a chain store. (local chain store = oxymoron?) He noticed the proud and iconic “As Seen on TV” logo and mentioned he’d once survived a visit to the As Seen on TV store.

How do we redesign a new economic theory framed by ecological systems? Economics as we know it today is broken. Unable to explain, to predict or to protect, it is need of root-and-branch replacement. Or, to borrow from Alan Greenspan, it is fundamentally "flawed". the best ever black bean burgers - The Talking Kitchen The title says it all, no? Look, I know that’s a bold statement there, coming from a non-vegetarian nonetheless, but I’m for real. These quinoa black bean burgers are so good, while I devoured delicately lady-like consumed them, I considered, for the moment, strickening all meat from my diet and surviving solely on black bean burgers alone. The Standard & Poor’s 500 finished last week at a record high of 1859, the Dow Jones Av-erage closed at 16,321, and the Nasdaq Composite ended at 4308. Green economy The green economy is one that results in reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. Green economy is an economy or economic development model based on sustainable development and a knowledge of ecological economics.[1] A feature distinguishing it from prior economic regimes is the direct valuation of natural capital and ecological services as having economic value (see The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity and Bank of Natural Capital) and a full cost accounting regime in which costs externalized onto society via ecosystems are reliably traced back to, and accounted for as liabilities of, the entity that does the harm or neglects an asset.[citation needed]

Eco Art: A Profile of Andrew Goldsworthy At a recent visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, I found myself especially intrigued by this: The piece is part of a work of art called “Three Cairns” by British sculptor and environmentalist Andrew Goldsworthy. It’s part of a nationwide project, Goldsworthy’s largest in the west Hemisphere. This LJ cairn, along with its sister cairns in Iowa and New York, are made of stones and aim to explore how the environment works on the materials over time.
