How to Go Green: In the Community Sustainable living has certainly become a buzz phrase. More and more people are looking at ways to reduce their ecological footprint: driving less, eating less meat, wearing sustainable fashions. As individuals, we are increasingly aware of the impact we have on the planet and our fellow humans. But is greening our own lifestyle enough? By taking the concept of sustainable living beyond the narrow, individualistic approach, we can learn to see our interconnectedness to our environment and its inhabitants. By getting involved in our communities, by talking to our neighbors, by supporting local groups, and by re-imagining where we live, we can green not only our own lifestyles, but our streets, neighborhoods, towns, cities and, ultimately, our societies.

A Book Review by Scott London The fact that the title of this book, The Ecology of Commerce, reads like an oxymoron illustrates how wide the gap has become between the natural world and our commercial lives. Business believes that if it doesn't continue to grow and instead cuts back and retreats, it will destroy itself. Ecologists believe that if business continues its unabated expansion it will destroy the world around it. In this eloquent and visionary book, Paul Hawken describes a third way, a path that is inherently sustainable and restorative but which uses many of the historically effective organizational and market techniques of free enterprise. Central to Hawken's argument are two basic facts: 1) the age of industrialism, as we know it, has come to an end; and 2) we are confronting a global ecological crisis that is considerably more acute than most of us realize.

Eco Art: A Profile of Andrew Goldsworthy At a recent visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, I found myself especially intrigued by this: The piece is part of a work of art called “Three Cairns” by British sculptor and environmentalist Andrew Goldsworthy. It’s part of a nationwide project, Goldsworthy’s largest in the west Hemisphere. This LJ cairn, along with its sister cairns in Iowa and New York, are made of stones and aim to explore how the environment works on the materials over time.
