THE BRAIN FROM TOP TO BOTTOM Sexual reproduction in human beings is made possible by the fusion of two reproductive cells, or “gametes”—the ovum from the mother and the sperm cell from the father. This fusion results in the formation of a zygote with 46 chromosomes: half from the mother and half from the father. The zygote thus acquires a unique genetic identity, so that it is far more accurate to speak of the sex act as one of procreation (the creation of a new being) rather than one of reproduction, which would imply simply producing the same thing over again. One day after fertilization, the zygote begins a series of mitotic divisions in which the considerable volume of cytoplasm from the ovum is divided among the multiple daughter cells. Hence, during these first cell divisions, the zygote, now called an embryo, does not grow in size but does move successively through the stages where it is composed of 2, 4, 8, and then 16 cells, called blastomeres. Looking At Tears Under A Microscope Reveals An Amazing Fact One day Rose-Lynn Fisher wondered if her tears of grief would look different compared to her tears of joy, so she began to explore them up close under a microscope. She studied 100 different tears and found that basal tears (the ones that our body produces to lubricate our eyes) are drastically different from the tears that happen when we are chopping onions. The tears that come about from hard laughter aren’t even close to the tears of sorrow. Like a drop of ocean water each tiny tear drop carries a microcosm of human experience. Her project is called The Topography of Tears. Tears from laughing until crying Tears of change Tears of possibility and hope Tears of grief Tears from onions Joseph Stromberg of the Smithsonian’s Collage of Arts and Sciences explained that there are three major types of tears: basal, reflex, and psychic (triggered by emotions). Basal tears Tears of timeless reunion Tears of ending and beginning Tears of release Tears of elation at a liminal moment Tears of remembrance

Entropy of a Gas Thermodynamics is a branch of physics that deals with the energy and work of a system. In aerodynamics, we are most interested in thermodynamics in the study of propulsion systems and understanding high speed flows. The first law of thermodynamics indicates that the total energy of a system is conserved. Total energy includes the potential and kinetic energy, the work done by the system, and the transfer of heat through the system. Entropy, like temperature and pressure, can be explained on both a macro scale and a micro scale. delta S = delta Q / T During a thermodynamic process, the temperature T of an object changes as heat Q is applied or extracted. dS = dQ / T The change in entropy is then the inverse of the temperature integrated over the change in heat transfer. dE = dQ - dW where E is the internal energy and W is the work done by the system. dQ = dE + p dV where p is the pressure and V is the volume of the gas. H = E + p * V Then: dH = dE + p dV + V dp dQ = dH - V dp - p dV + p dV and
