Welcome to the MapMaker Interactive This tutorial explains how to explore National Geographic Education's interactive GIS mapping tool and tools for customizing outline maps for print. Use the zoom bar to go from a world view to a local view (or in cartographic terms, from a large scale to a small scale). Use the location menus at the top to zoom from a world view to a continent, country, or other region. Identify your geographic position on the map using the latitude and longitude display at the bottom left. Switch between different styles of base maps including a custom layer from National Geographic, satellite, terrain, and topographic views. Using the 1-Page base map, click on a continent, country, or state to load the corresponding MapMaker 1-Page map. You can customize and download your 1-Page map, or go back to the interactive map to explore more. The tabs on the left offer different tools for working with the map: themes, drawing tools, and markers.

The sun in December 2016, and a look ahead By Frank Bosse and Fritz Vahrenholt (Translated/summarized by P Gosselin) In December solar activity was rather quiet, with the sunspot number at only 19.5. In December solar activity was only 35% of what the mean is for this month into a cycle. Figure 1: Sunspot activity for solar cycle (SC) 24 (red) compared to the mean cycle (blue) and the comparatively very similarly behaving SC 5 (black) from the year 1798 to 1810. We are now 97 months into SC 24 since it started in 2008. Figure 2: Comparison of all the solar cycles. No year of the current cycle reached the mean value: Figure 3: The relative sunspot activity for each year of SC 24. So far SC 24 has reached only 56% of the average activity of all cycles occurring since 1755. For estimating what may be in store for SC 25, which is expected to begin around 2020, it is of great interest to look at the polar fields of the sun. Do-It-Yourself: Solar variability effect on climate. Part II
By Javier In a previous article here, I showed how anyone with a computer with internet connection and Excel could check the basis of the 980-year periodicity in solar activity, known as the Eddy cycle, and its excellent match with a North Atlantic iceberg proxy record, known as the Bond series. In this part I will show you how the same can be done with a proxy for the Asian Monsoon strength based on the deposition of δ18O in a speleothem from stalagmite DA from Dongge Cave in Southern China. The scientific reference article for this is: “The Holocene Asian Monsoon: Links to Solar Changes and North Atlantic Climate,” by Wang et al., 2005, can be found here. And the data for stalagmite DA can be found here. A plot of this data with both axis inverted for convenience is shown: Figure 1.
