The Book Bench: Comic, Sans Appeal
The war on Comic Sans continues with the latest salvo fired across the pond by the Guardian. There, Dan Hancox argues that there are more important issues to worry about than a font. Indeed. Comic Sans is, let’s be honest, aesthetically null. The font was invented in 1994 by Vincent Connare for a software package called Microsoft Bob (which is included in Time magazine's list of the fifty worst inventions of all time, along with Agent Orange). What sets Comic Sans apart from equally egregious fonts like Curlz MT? These obviously incongruous uses make Comic Sans a rich mine for comedy. Sorry the entire world can't all be done in stark Eurotrash Swiss type. Comic Sans is that rare thing: something we've hated so much for so long that it’s become rather dear to us.
