The Oscar Schindler Story Goddess Will the "Great Goddess" Resurface?: Reflections in Neolithic Europe Many enthusiasts of the recent "Great Goddess" movement are looking to archaeology in the hopes that it will provide validation to their theories of what they would consider a former religious and societal utopia. This was allegedly a peace-loving, egalitarian society spread across the whole of Europe, wherein the Mother Goddess was worshipped as the center of religion. As evidence from archaeology, thousands of artifacts from Neolithic Europe have been discovered, mostly in the form of female figurines. The leading pioneer of the goddess movement is the archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, who has spent thirty years studying patterns and symbols of cult objects and also developed the field she refers to as "archeomythology," which embodies the fields of archaeology, comparative mythology, and folklore. She believes that the key to discovering the meaning of prehistory is through interdisciplinary research.

1901 to World War II Knights Templar - StumbleUpon rotten > Library > Conspiracy > Knights Templar According to legend, the Knights Templar was founded in 1118 to protect tourists headed for Jerusalem. There the small band of warrior monks established a headquarters. In due course, they somehow managed to gain possession of the Ark of the Covenant, which they hid for safekeeping. Even though the Templars swore allegiance to the Pope, their beliefs were not exactly orthodox. But when they weren't busy doing that, they managed to amass a financial empire with vast holdings. By the dawn of the 14th century, the Knights Templar had become Europe's dominant religious order. In France, King Philip IV owed the Templars a lot of money, which he didn't really feel like repaying. Some of the Templars escaped to Portugal, where (for a few years) they enjoyed the protection of its king. In March 1314, Jacques de Molay was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Inquisition. "I confess that I am indeed guilty of the greatest infamy.

Magic rotten > Library > The Occult > Magic "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." That quote from Arthur C. Clarke is probably as good a place to begin this discussion as any. What is magic? Magic is manipulating nature through apparently impossible means. It's probably best to break the topic down into bite-sized chunks. Manipulating Nature The original and still best use of magic is as a tool to get what you want. The major schools of magic are: Traditional Magic: Traditional usually refers to longstanding schools of knowledge passed down orally over the ages, often within families. Religion and Magic No matter how much they would prefer to deny it, all Religion has an element of magic to it, whether it's Christianity, Islam, Judaism or Buddhism. Religious magic comes in a number of flavors, the most common of which involves invoking the name of a supernatural entity and petitioning said entity for favors, usually in a very stylized format. The 1938 Radio Broadcast of 'The War of the Worlds' On the evening of October 30th, 1938, radio listeners were treated to a dramatic production of HG Wells' The War of the Worlds that was so original, and so convincing, that it apparently led some to believe that beings from the Red Planet had invaded America. The notorious broadcast, performed by the Mercury Theatre, a company run by a 23-year old ingenue named Orson Welles, took the 1898 science fiction novel and turned it into an ingenious radio play. Welles' conceit was to dress the broadcast up as a regular musical programme, and have it interrupted by reports of the extraterrestrial invasion fleet touching down in New Jersey. The absence of commercial breaks added to the versimilitude. Despite regular announcements throughout that the programme was a dramatic adaptation of the novel, some listeners were apparently convinced that it was the real deal. You can listen to the entire 60-minute broadcast in the player above. From The Archive: The Martian Century Citizen Kane

Photographers used its growing influence to expose society's evils, which the prosperous, self-indulgent Belle Époque chose to ignore: the degrading conditions of workers in big-city slums, the barbarism of child labor, the terrorism of lynching, the devastation of war.
