Spectra: Color, Light & Waves Science Project | Exploratorium Science Snacks Spectra Fingerprints for light sources. Using a diffraction grating, you can observe that what seems to be a single color of light may really be a combination of colors, called a spectrum. You can also compare the spectra produced by different light sources. A shoe box or a mailing tube about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter and about 1 foot (30 cm) long. (30 minutes or less) At one end of the shoe box or mailing tube, cut a rectangular hole measuring about 3/4 inch (2 cm) wide by 1-1/2 inches (3.5 cm) high. At the opposite end from the slit, cut an opening measuring about 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 cm). If you are using a shoe box, put the top on the box. Look through the diffraction grating into the box or the tube. Adjust the slit width until you obtain a spectrum that is both reasonably bright and reasonably well defined. The final device is a simple spectroscope, a device used for forming and examining the unique combination of colors that make up any light. (30 minutes or more)

EAAE Eratosthenes Project - The Eratosthenes Project The EAAE has associated to the Physics Department José Juan Gambiagi, of Buenos Aires, IAU, the Asociación Física Argentina and the Projeto Eratostenes Brasil to perform a worldwide Eratostenes Experiment using data from schools all around the world. To allow the simultaneous participation of schools from northern and southern hemispheres that have different school calendars, the experiment shall be reproduced on the autumn equinox that will occur on September 21st , 2014. On a window of dates between September 18th and September 24th, 2014 the schools must measure the shadow of the Sun as it passes the local meridian, as explained on the links of the Main Menu on the left side of this page. EAAE has performed this Experiment in the past with students all around Europe in 1997 and in 2010, and this year's event marks the beginning of the annual basis of the project in EAAE's strategy.

Classroom Lessons We develop ready-to-go standards-based space science activities and curriculum for your classroom. Many are hands-on activities and inquiry-based. In these materials, we incorporate reading, writing, math, and basic physical science. Here are some of our – and we hope your -- favorite lessons. See the “more” page to access our full library of lessons. Grades K-6 Eye on the Sky—Integrating Science and Language Arts Introduce your students to astronomy in the K-4 classroom with this easy-to–use curriculum focusing on the Sun/Earth/Moon system. Reading, Writing and Rings! GEMS Space Science Sequence Students examine the astronomy concepts related to size and scale, gravity, orbits, and moon phases and eclipses. How Satellites See Meet three NASA satellites and compare images from each to learn how they "see" the Universe at different wavelengths. Third From the Sun Learn about observing earth from space and guess the locations pictured in Landsat images. Grades 6-9 Find That Planet! Grades 9-12
