The wisdom of these leaders helps keep your personal freedom in perspective. The new Star Trek Discovery launched this week and is making big buzz beyond the Trekkies. Living in a Star Trek universe certainly has its appeal over much of the backward thinking of many current politicians these days and I remain hopeful about the future. I see the advances made by science and technology as, overall, good for society as a whole.

Paris climate deal: the world's greatest diplomatic success In the final meeting of the Paris talks on climate change on Saturday night, the debating chamber was full, and the atmosphere tense. Ministers from 196 countries sat behind their country nameplates, aides flocking them, with observers packed into the overflowing hall. John Kerry, the US secretary of state, talked animatedly with his officials, while China’s foreign minister Xie Zhenhua wore a troubled look. They had been waiting in this hall for nearly two hours. The French hosts had trooped in to take their seats on the stage, ready to applause on schedule at 5.30pm – but it was now after 7pm, and the platform was deserted. After two weeks of fraught negotiations, was something going badly wrong?

How to Create a Fantasy World Learning how to create a fantasy world that feels real to readers is easy when you follow these five steps: Step 1: Plan the lie of the land Creating a solid, believable physical world is the first step. The reason some fantasy novelists and readers seem so obsessed with maps is because the act of physically mapping the world grounds it. Missing Fonts in Mac OS X Lion (10.7) After upgrading to Lion I found it disabled a few of the system fonts. This made lots of websites not display as intended and warnings about Missing Fonts in Pages (which had the benefit of artificially inflating my book's page count bringing it nearer completion). Turns out Lion can disable certain fonts in certain circumstances; I did a clean install of Lion on a different drive when running the Install Mac OS X Lion app. You can re-enable the fonts like this: Open Font Book, it's stored in your Applications folder. You've got Lion now so you could be fancy and use Launchpad.Find a font that has been disabled - in my case Verdana was the key one.

Reward Systems, An Excerpt From Level Design: Concept, Theory, and Practice Reward Systems, An Excerpt From Level Design: Concept, Theory, and Practice By Rudolf Kremers [Gamasutra is presenting an in-depth excerpt from IGF nominated Dyson/Eufloria co-creator Rudolf Kremers' new book Level Design: Concept, Theory, and Practice, which was recently released by AK Peters. This extract, just part of the book's seventh chapter, looks at wish fulfilment and escapism occasioned by some of the best video game level designs.] If somebody holding carrots beats you with a stick it would be very satisfying if you were to wrestle the stick away from your tormentor and make him give you all the carrots. The previous chapter discusses many of the possible ways in which reward systems and structures can work, and, as importantly, what expectations people have from life.

How to prepare algorithmically created content in #Processing for offset print #res13 / @andreasgysin Last month at Resonate festival in Belgrade Andreas Gysin ran a workshop titled “Printshop With Processing” aimed at graphic designers who want to integrate Processing in their print-production workflow. The participants discussed and experimented with different ways on how to output algorithmically created graphical ornaments or representations of data to multiple page documents, ready for offset print with process (CMYK) and spot colors. Using this tutorial and examples, previously edited vector graphics, typography blocks or entire layouts in PDF documents can be imported, manipulated and used as templates instead of adding them later-on ‘by hand’. Andreas created few examples that demonstrate the use of a slightly modified processing pgraphicspdf class which permits, among a few other things, to set colors in cmyk space. The actual Processing PDF library permits to create PDF documents with the familiar Processing graphics API. → download from github → view on github
