I’m a Curatr ratr I’m into my second week of a course on the Curatr platform. The course is, by coincidence, about how to become a good online curator of content and a course on the Curatr platform works by, well, curating content! Enough circularities. The course itself is about curation, in this context the act of searching the web for material on a particular subject and re-presenting it as a series of links to the original sites. As the name suggests the course doesn’t include any new or specially written content other than (and this is important) some discussion questions and an element of gamification. Despite having no interest in games, I found this element of the gamification quite appealing as it helps to chunk and consolidate the very diverse messages of the very diverse items. I found some elements of the platform a bit clunky, like not being able to resize the content and discussion windows and too many email notifications (I could probably turn them off).

A post on Re/code today cites “numerous sources close to Microsoft” as confirming that the company may have its selection for a new CEO picked out, and ready to announce within the next week. According to the post, Satya Nadella, Microsoft executive vice president in charge of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise division, is the front-runner for the gig. Bringing an insider up to the top spot could work out in Microsoft’s favor in many ways, since Nadella undoubtedly has a solid understanding of the company’s history, strengths, and weaknesses. That said, it’s no secret that bringing people in from the outside to reassess the company’s direction would go a long way toward pleasing shareholders. In short, Microsoft could use some direction.

5 essential (and free!) content curation tools I tend to have problems with brevity when I write. Because of this, people often mistakenly believe I don't deal with writer's block. That is not the case. Sure, I always have 2,000 words in my pocket, but those words are not often about the topic I need to write about. When the blank page stares relentlessly back at me, one of my favorite fall backs is to curate and comment on other people's content. However, everyone is a curator these days. Duplicate Detective review: Make short work of finding duplicate files As much as we love feature-packed applications that perform countless tasks, there’s nothing wrong with an inexpensive utility that does the one thing we need without much fuss and bother. Such is Fiplab’s $5 (currently on sale for $3) Duplicate Detective (Mac App Store link). As its name implies, it exists to locate duplicate files on your Mac and then, if you wish, fling them into the Trash. Duplicate Detective does its work in a simple way. Just launch the application, and then drag a folder or volume into the utility’s window. Duplicate Detective scans that folder or volume, and then lets you know how many duplicates it finds. If you have a lot of files—say, hundreds of thousands, as could easily be the case with a large hard drive—this can take a very long time. Click Next, and you’ll see a list of duplicate groups on the left side of the window. With your choices made, click Next. Bare bones though it is, Duplicate Detective offers a couple of customization options.
