Why design fail: the new 50.000 Lebanese Lira banknote design | The Blog of Tarek Atrissi: Arabic Type, Typography, Design and Visual CultureThe Blog of Tarek Atrissi: Arabic Type, Typography, Design and Visual Culture by Tarek Atrissi To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Lebanon’s independence, Lebanon’s Central Bank issued a 50.000 Lebanese Lira banknote, uniquely designed to commemorate the occasion. The new design, released a week before independence day, was heavily criticized by the public, particularly on social media. All these reactions are for a good reason: the design is by all means one big failure. Judging design is not a matter of pointing the “ugly” from the “beautiful”. Let’s start by “design function”: Every design has a function and is conceived to serve a very specific purpose. The other basic function of this banknote design is, of course, being a piece of money to be used. Let’s look as well at another important aspect of design: design process. Such mistakes would never occur if a healthy and professional design process were adopted. Which leads me finally to the “visual aspect” of the design. I am not the kind of person that criticizes the work of other designers easily.
Olivia Arthur photographs Saudi Arabian life in her book, Jeddah Diaries. Copyright Olivia Arthur/Magnum Photos In 2009, the British Council invited Olivia Arthur to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to teach a two-week photography workshop for women. She agreed with the hope that she would also have the chance to make some work of her own. Her photos from that time, as well as two subsequent trips, are collected in her book, Jeddah Diary, published by Fishbar. “I wanted to make a series that would open up some of this strange world to people who don't know about it,” Arthur said via email. But being a photographer in an ultraconservative country with strict rules on what women can and can’t do could be frustrating, Arthur found. Arthur said many foreigners who have lived in the country for years are never invited into a Saudi home. “In the beginning it was frustrating. Arthur’s students often surprised her. Modern Institute of Reflexology When Donna M. Bean of Gwinnett County, Georgia, decided to train with Modern Institute and become a Reflexologist ... she ran into governmental regulations that required a reflexologist become licensed as a Massage Therapist. Here is her story: I was asked to write my story about overcoming ill conceived governmental reflexology regulations in order to inspire others to follow their heart when confronted with such barriers. I want to let people know that just because someone says something, or the government makes a law, that doesn’t mean you can’t change it. This Chart was contributed by Reflexologist Jay Kaufman whose ancestory is Russian. "If you do what you've always done; You'll get what you've always got." ----- David Steele

Alive and kickin' | Mademoiselle Chaos I've been making bra patterns lately and I've noticed something. When you think about it, it's totally obvious, but it took me a while to wrap my head around it. When making a bra pattern, you think of the breast as (roughly) a hemisphere — or rather an off-center ellipsoid — whatever, you get the idea. The basic idea is that the apex marks the area of the breast farthest away from your chest, and that the volume is roughly distributed equally above and below the apex level. Haha. Breasts are not hemispheres. There are many breasts out there, and while the hemisphere/ellipsoid simplification is not that far off, there are some things to consider when making (and measuring for) a custom bra pattern. When drafting a pattern, you will approximate the (desired) shape of the bra (and thus, the breast inside it) with a few simple variables: width of the cup, depth of the cup, width of the breast base, apex position, etc. I've tried to illustrate this in the picture below.
