Make Your Own Witch Hazel Extract Someone had dropped off a bunch of old herb magazines at the barn. We use old magazines and newspapers to light fires in the wood furnace there. Anyway, Fred grabbed a bunch of them for me and I've been enjoying reading them. This recipe for Witch Hazel Tonic is from The Herb Quarterly (Winter 1994). First, here's a few paragraphs from the accompanying article on Witch Hazel: Witch Hazel has a long history of medicinal use, primarily as an antiseptic and an astringent. Many of these treatments passed on to the American colonists. Pure witch hazel extract, available in many drugstores and supermarkets, is the most frequently used form of the herb--more than a million gallons are sold each year. Witch Hazel is an oddball shrub. Here's the recipe: Although the Pilgrims' tonic is not as potent as the commercial extract, you can follow this easy recipe to have fun brewing your own witch hazel remedy: Prune one pound of fresh twigs from shrubs as soon as they have flowered. Onwards, Witch Hazel

» The Cheapskate Guide: 50 Tips for Frugal Living Post written by Leo Babauta. Follow me on Twitter. Confession time: I’m a cheapskate. Some would say frugal, which sounds much more positive, but in reality I can be a real cheapskate. I am fairly frugal (though not always), but sometimes I take it too far: I have T-shirts with holes in them, I never buy new clothes, we’re shopping for a new couch because our current one has holes in it, and I ran my current pair of running shoes until the soles fell off. However, I have gradually learned to be frugal in many ways that I would recommend to others. Why live frugally? All of which you might believe, but I believe I do have a life. So, if you’d like some tips on frugal living, here are just a few, from a cheapskate. Go with one car. —Read more about simple productivity, focus and getting great things done in my book, The Power of Less.

I used to believe that a person could never have too many books, or too many bookmarks. Then I moved into an apartment slightly larger than some people’s closets (and much smaller than many people’s garages) and all these beliefs got turned on their naïeve little heads. But what a person can always look for more of is really cool unique bookmarks. Page corner bookmarks are cute, practical and deeply under-represented in the world.* They’re easy to make, easy to customize, and will set you apart from all those same-same flat rectangular bookmarks. If you like this tutorial, here are a couple others that might be up your alley. How to Unclog Pores and Clear Acne Are clogged pores turning your face into a strawberry? Acne ruining your life? This instructable will tell you how to unclog your pores and clear acne in just a few simple steps! This is a very low-maintenance method that requires only a few items, patience, and a tiny bit of will. This method involves four major steps: Ridding your surface skin of oil and dirt Opening your pores for proper exfoliation using steam Exfoliating to remove oil and dirt trapped in your pores Applying 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide to cleanse deep inside your pores and rejuvenate them. The reason this works so well is because the steam opens your pores allowing you to clean them better, while the facewash removes surface dirt/oil, the exfoliant removes the dirt/oil in your pores, and the Benzoyl Peroxide deep cleans while rejuvenating your pores. I used to have seriously bad acne that drove me crazy.

An ingenious new iPhone app unlocks a trick called 'ticket splitting' which can save users hundreds of pounds a year. The app works out the ABSOLUTE cheapest way to get between two points - which is often, illogically, to buy two separate tickets for the journey. You don't get off the train, you just buy two tickets. It's perfectly legal, but train companies prefer to keep quiet about it - and the calculations have been too complex to carry out in a train station until now. The free Tickety Split app saves rail users up to 68 per cent by using a clever trick to get round hidden charges.

Anthro-Inspired Mirror You all know we love a good Anthropologie knockoff around here – so a couple of days ago when I was browsing online I came across this mirror. Oh I definitely need that. Hold the presses – did that say $498??? So after scouring the thrift shops, cutting myself on mirror glass, and overcoming an unreasonable fear of Mod Podge, here is my version! (Bear with me here – taking a picture of a mirror is a bit tricky. Ready for the tutorial? You’ll need: A MirrorEasy Off Oven CleanerFabric (enough to cover the frame and the back of the mirror)Mod PodgeA Staple Gun or other framing tool I went searching for a method to removing silvering and came across a great tutorial at Mitzi’s Collectibles. I started with a frame that I found at the thrift store. Obviously not clean. We actually had to ask on this one – because it just said 1951. $19.51 seemed way to high – and it was. Start by taking your mirror out of the frame. Lay your mirror down on a protected surface. Now walk away. Keep scrubbing.
