» 50 Amazing and Essential Novels to Enrich Your Library Post written by Leo Babauta. I recently ran into a couple of reading lists (I’ll share them at the end) and realized that I LOVE reading book recommendations. I can’t get enough of them. So I decided to compile my own (somewhat eclectic) list of novels I think are amazing and essential to every library. I hope you enjoy it. I should make some notes before diving in. Another note: there are actually many more books listed here than 50 — a number of those listed are actually series of books, in a couple cases series that include 20 or more books. There are classics here, but there are cheap thrillers and popular fiction and even a few “kids” books. If you could fill your library with only 50 books, you could do much worse than choose these 50. Not in any order but just in the order they came to me: King Lear, by Shakespeare. Some other lists of books I’ve enjoyed recently:

The raven has long been associated with death and dark omens, but the real bird is somewhat of a mystery. Unlike its smaller cousin the crow, not a lot has been written about this remarkable bird. Here are 10 fascinating facts about ravens. 1. When it comes to intelligence, these birds rate up there with chimpanzees and dolphins. If a raven knows another raven is watching it hide its food, it will pretend to put the food in one place while really hiding it in another. 2. In captivity, ravens can learn to talk better than some parrots. 3. Many European cultures took one look at this large black bird with an intense gaze and thought it was evil in the flesh … er, feather. 4. Cultures from Tibet to Greece have seen the raven as a messenger for the gods. 5. The Native Americans weren’t far off about the raven’s mischievous nature. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

This Lake In Tanzania Has A Deadly Secret. These Shocking Photos Show The Haunting Reality. Tanzania’s Lake Natron is one of the most serene lakes in all of Africa, but it’s also the source of some of the most eerie photographs ever captured. You see, Lake Natron has a very deadly secret, it turns any animal it touches to stone. This incredibly rare phenomenon is caused by the chemical makeup of the lake, the alkalinity of Lake Natron varies between pH 9 and pH 10.5. Which is so caustic it burns the skin and eyes of animals that get too close to the water, leaving behind something straight out of a horror film, as can be seen in these incredible shots captured by photographer Nick Brandt for his book, Across the Ravaged Land. Calcified Fish Eagle Calcified Caped Dove Calcified Flamingo reflects in the water Calcified Bat Calcified Swallow Calcified Songbird Calcified Swallow II Calcified Bat II It should be noted the animals weren’t found in these haunting positions, here’s what Nick had to say: I wonder what would happen if a gargoyle dived into the lake?

Blog Archive » The Beautiful Nightmares of Zdzislaw Beksinski Artist Zdzislaw Beksiński is best known for his immense, obsessively detailed paintings of catastrophic landscapes, surreal humanoid figures and afflicted nudes. Born in 1929, he grew up in southern Poland, then traveled to Krakow to study architecture where he subsequently spent several miserable years working as a construction site supervisor. His work from that era is primarily photography and sculpture. In his mid thirties, Beksiński shifted his focus to painting large, purely abstract pieces on wooden boards (he preferred wood to canvas). Beksiński’s post-apocalyptic vision, much like Giger’s, is uniquely disturbing owing in part to a highly developed architectural eye. Although he depicts a harrowing world, Beksiński claimed that much of his work is misunderstood. Like a cathedral or skyscraper, many of his paintings are strangely life-affirming in a shock-and-awe sort of way. But yeah, heebie jeebies nonetheless… Thus began a very tragic era for the man.
