How To Stop Procrastinating

» Best Procrastination Tip Ever Post written by Leo Babauta. Your first thought as you look at this article will be, “I’ll read this later.” But don’t. Let the urge to switch to a new task pass. It’ll take you two minutes. I’ve written the book on ending procrastination, but I’ve since come up with a very simple technique for beating everyone’s favorite nemesis. Try it now: Identify the most important thing you have to do today. Clear away distractions. Sit there, and focus on getting started. Pay attention to your mind, as it starts to have urges to switch to another task. But don’t move. Notice also your mind trying to justify not doing the task. Now just take one small action to get started. Get started, and the rest will flow.

Knowledge Hound - The Web's biggest how-to directory! Most of these articles come from my old website, Knowledge Hound. It was the web's first how-to directory; that is, a curated collection of third-party links. I founded the site in 1997 as How-To Heaven after becoming frustrated with how difficult it was to find tutorials. In 1999, I joined forces with a silent partner and rebranded the site as Knowledge Hound. Our traffic grew dramatically. We were featured on TV by affiliate stations for NBC News and CBS News. In February of 2011, Google changed their search algorithm to downgrade all directory websites. In September of 2013, I finally gave up and deleted the Knowledge Hound directory, moving my focus to the 100+ articles that I've written. It's been a long and amazing journey.

Do you really need more time? The single biggest “push back” I get from people when I share about how building practices into their life can unleash new ideas and help them be more productive goes something like this: “Yeah, that’s great, but I really just don’t have the time.” After collecting myself, I reply…Did you at any point in the last week: Watch TV? Read for pleasure? Check Facebook/Twitter? The inevitable response: “yes“. “OK,” I reply, “then you didn’t mean to say you ‘don’t have time.’ Stares. Each of us has 168 hours in a week. 48. 4 hours per day every single day for family activity? 5 hours per week for hanging out with friends? You can still watch TV, read and do other things if you’d like. The point is this: you have time to do things that matter, that create value and that help you get where you want to be in your life and career. We need to overcome the fear of the unknown and simply get moving on what matters.
