I use music a lot in my teaching of English Language Learners. I thought people might find it helpful to see which sites I believe to be the best out there to help teach English — Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced — through music. Music is a familiar, fun, and engaging tool to use in learning a second language. This is latest of my “The Best…” series, also known as Websites Of The Year. ESL Song Lyric Exercise Worksheets (mostly cloze) These are some song-lyric worksheets I’ve developed over the years for my English as a second language classes. Most are based on pop and rock classics from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. A few are based on more recent songs. Generally speaking, they don’t focus on any particular grammar point; I usually let music be a break from grammar. Down below the song lists, there are some lesson plan suggestions and a little review of the iPod/iPhone player I use in the classroom. The iTunes icons and Amazon icons link to the particular recording used to make the worksheet. The list is roughly in order of increasing difficulty. BOB DYLAN | BLOGGISH When I heard the news of the Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to Bob Dylan, I couldn’t help rejoicing and being delighted as I grew up listening to his great songs and when I was in high school – quinta ginnasio with my beloved and innovative teacher of Italian Mrs. Cattaruzza – we listened to his song Blowing in the Wind and discussed its meaning as an example of poetry. Therefore I couldn’t miss the opportunity to share some insights with you, my dear students. First of all, I was very surprised at realizing that most of you didn’t know who he was nor were they familiar with his songs. We started by doing some Jigsaw reading of some articles from the International press assigned to different groups who had to find the relevant information and summarize them to the members of the other groups. Depending on the song, you can teach various topics, from tenses to pronouns, from vocabulary to grammar constructions. Let’s focus on teaching adjectives today. 1. This song is great for teaching a large number of adjectives, as well as for using the pattern “as…as”. 2. While teaching adjectives with this song you can explain the difference between “you’re” and “your” at the same time. 3. It can change the atmosphere in the room within seconds. Songs sung in English are listened to around the world and students can often feel real progress in their level of English when they can begin to sing along to the chorus or even just to be able to separate what at first seemed to be a constant stream of words! I am going to split this article into using music and using songs and I will share twelve of my favourite activities with you. Before bringing music into the class, it may be worthwhile to do a music survey or questionnaire to find out what the students enjoy listening to. Using music Music in the classroom doesn’t always mean listening to a song and using the lyrics in some way.
