A Collection of Free Media Resources This post attempts to list my top favorite free sites for royalty-free images, music, and videos for creative projects. Since 2000 I have been teaching university students how to design for print, the web, and the screen. One of the very first things we go over is that it’s always best to use your OWN original photos, drawings, music, and videos that you created yourself. No need to get mauled by a lion trying to take that close-up That’s where royalty-free and public domain goodies come in! The list below is not at all an exhaustive one, but it will get you started right away with some of my very favorite sites tried and tested by myself and my students over the years with much success. MUSIC and SOUND EFFECTS:Flashkit.com -This is an old favorite of mine and students since the turn of the millennium.
Unmeasurable or immeasurable? | LibroEditing proofreading, editing, transcription, localisation This is one that came up in something I was editing a few days ago. And, I admit, one that I had to check in the dictionary. I was pretty sure the writer wanted unmeasurable (I was right), and I wasn’t sure that immeasurable was a word (I learned something, notably that SpellChecker doesn’t think it’s a word, which is why we still use dictionaries!). Unmeasurable means, specifically not able to be measured objectively. We use this one in the literal sense: “the immense lizard was unmeasurable with the tiny ruler in the standard lizard measuring kit”; “the sea trench in which the angler fish lived was of an unmeasurable depth”. Immeasurable means, a bit less specifically, I suppose, too large, extensive or extreme to measure. “I experienced immeasurable relief when I discovered that the width of the lake, filling and evaporating as it did, was actually unmeasurable.” You can find more troublesome pairs here and the index to them all so far is here. Support: Video in the Classroom Classroom video projects teach students to plan, organize, write, communicate, collaborate, and analyze. In fact, video has become so prolific that some colleges even include video submissions as part of their application process. As this media further matures, students may need to be able to express themselves as effectively through moving imagery as with the written word. Using video could be as simple as recording a student oral presentation for future review, or as elaborate as producing an original short film. Depending on the complexity of the project, consider these suggested steps for ensuring that your students create thoughtful final products that demonstrate their knowledge rather than pieces full of flash but potentially lacking in substance. One of the most complicated aspects of working with video is interpreting the various file formats that work with cameras as well as editing and publishing tools.
