Simple is Better: How to Write for the Web morgamic.com I often tweet about a favorite article of mine explaining how people read on the web. More and more I see this as a common problem all over the world. It opens simply enough: How Users Read on the WebThey don’t. Instead of just tweeting the article (which is ironically so long that people don’t read it) I’d like to instead study some examples from our site and show how it could improve our own site content. Often, I find that some of our site content is: Difficult to scanVerbosePassiveUnclearLikely to be ignored — users won’t read it So what should we do about it? We should educate ourselves and become familiar with best practicesThose who do understand the basics should do their best to teach othersWe could also conduct user research, eye tracking studies or run a/b tests to verify theories Either way, I’ll save you some time: simple is better. So let’s go to some examples. Bulleted lists Your goal should be to identify common threads or trains of thought. Before Mozilla is a non-profit. After

Snowclone Snowclone is a neologism for a type of cliché and phrasal template originally defined as "a multi-use, customizable, instantly recognizable, time-worn, quoted or misquoted phrase or sentence that can be used in an entirely open array of different variants".[1] An example of a snowclone is the phrase "grey is the new black," which gave rise to the template "X is the new Y." X and Y may be replaced with different words or phrases—for example, "comedy is the new rock 'n' roll."[2] Using "there are always more fish in the sea" as a template, one could say, "there are always more sharks in the cesspool." History[edit] The term snowclone was coined by Glen Whitman on January 15, 2004, in response to a request from Geoffrey Pullum on the Language Log weblog.[3] Pullum endorsed it as a term of art the next day,[1] and it has since been adopted by other linguists, journalists and authors.[4][5] The term alludes to one of Pullum's example template phrases: See also[edit] References[edit]

Brisbane residents flee homes as floodwaters rise | World news Thousands of Brisbane residents were stockpiling food and stacking sandbags or fleeing their homes yesterday as the worst floodwaters to hit Queensland for 50 years surged towards Australia's third-largest city. Many people in the state capital, fearful of the damage already done, appeared to have heeded the authorities' evacuation warnings. By last night, Brisbane's city centre was a ghost town populated only by a few shop owners hoping to save their businesses with last-minute barricades of sandbags and plastic sheeting. Ten people died on Monday as cars and pedestrians were swept away in an "inland instant tsunami" that sent a wall of water coursing through the city of Toowoomba, west of Brisbane. More than 40 people were pulled from rooftops by military helicopters that were still searching for 90 missing people yesterday. Another 200 Australian Defence Force personnel are being dispatched to southern Queensland, which has been declared a disaster area. "I have been shocked.

Flood toll to rise, weather hits Brisbane Last updated 01:07 12/01/2011 Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard warns the country to be prepared for more deaths in the Queensland flood disaster. Brisbane is headed for its worst floods since 1893, as a tenth flood death is confirmed. A disaster declaration had been made for the lower half of Queensland, including the greater Brisbane area, giving authorities forced evacuation powers if necessary. As the floods entered Brisbane, immediate evacuations were underway in Strathpine and Caboolture north of Brisbane, amid warnings flood levels are expected to be greater than in 1974. In Ipswich, southwest of Brisbane, more than 1000 residents have evacuated their homes as floodwaters continue to rise in the city. The death toll of this week's devastating floods has risen to 10, with 78 still missing, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said tonight. Are you caught in the flooding? There is a strong suggestion the current death toll will rise. "People have got to prepare for the worst," he said.
