HON Office Furniture – Desks, Workstations, Chairs, Storage & Files Feedback And Recognition Most Valued In Bosses: SHL Survey - Managing people Employees value feedback and recognition more than any other attributes in their boss, according to a new survey, with Generation Y workers the most needing of praise. Talent management company SHL recently surveyed 1,299 Australians about what they view as the most important characteristics in a boss. The survey reveals employees value their bosses’ ability to give good feedback and recognition more than any other attributes. This contrasts with results of the same survey in 2010, which found that the most important characteristics in a boss were honesty and trustworthiness. SHL national director Samantha Christopher says employee expectations have changed dramatically in the space of a year, partly due to easing concerns about the global financial crisis. “We are now back to [the employee mindset of] ‘what can the organisation do for me?’ “They want to know really clearly what is expected of them and whether they are achieving it or not,” Christopher says. Give timely praise.

Friction & Force of Gravity Support Slim Leaning Deck Chair It looks daunting if not downright dangerous – two side supports, anchored to nothing and angled away from normal (in the sense of: ninety degrees from the ground) look little like legs, and the seat swings freely between them. Still, this is basic physics at its best – adding the gravitational pull of the Earth as well as human weight makes it more stable, not less. While it would not work in space or some other zero-or-anti-gravity situation, it would be a wonderful seat to lean against your home on your deck or porch. Designed by Bernhard Burkard, the connections and materials are quite basic – metal fasteners hold together a wood frame, which in turn supports a canvas lounge chair. Rubber stoppers add frictional resistance to hold the whole thing in place.

Management Education's Unanswered Questions How has management education evolved, and where is it going? This question is of crucial importance for society, says HBS professor Rakesh Khurana. Business leaders are admired yet often distrusted, and the idea of management as a profession is similarly on shaky ground—as it has been for more than 100 years. According to Khurana, the schools first emphasized that managers should carry out their work in ways beneficial for society. It has been an invisible transformation, but society and business schools themselves must grapple with it. Khurana has witnessed the transformation from both sides of the aisle. He met with HBS Working Knowledge to discuss professionalization and how business schools shape—and have been shaped by—societal forces and values. Martha Lagace: What led you into this analysis? Rakesh Khurana: Since I was a graduate student I have been interested in how people at the top get their positions. Science. Were they over-optimistic? Q: What do students want?
