Manchester Association for Masonic Research « Provincial Grand Lodge of West Lancashire In 2009 The Manchester Association for Masonic Research celebrated its centenary. The association was born in 1909 from a desire to share knowledge and gain a better understanding of Freemasonry and it was formed to serve Lancashire, East and West, and Cheshire. The founders were drawn from each of the three Provinces and amongst them were the Earl of Derby and the Dean of Manchester. Others included Manchester’s Chief Librarian, Henry Sutton and the Boltonian Grand Treasurer of the United Grand Lodge of England Major John Booth along with Roderick Baxter and Fred Broadbent, both trenchant northern commentators and historians. These solid foundations have led to a century of published MAMR Transactions and each volume contains at least four talks and there are many gems amongst the collection. The Manchester Masonic Research Collection The Manchester Masonic Research Collection Some years ago the Library Collection of the Province of East Lancashire and of the Manchester Association of Masonic Research were combined and housed in the Library Room at Freemasons’ Hall in Manchester. However, this room was continually in use for Masonic Meetings, rehearsals, and for other meetings, so that access to the collection was very difficult to arrange. In order to facilitate access to members of the Craft and the general public, it was decided to offer the collection to the John Rylands University Library. In the interim the John Rylands Library has undergone refurbishment with the construction of a new Entrance Wing with the reception area, shop and café, with lift access to all floors. As from 1 November 2007, all items in the Collection will be listed and can be accessed remotely through the Library website: or consulted at reader reception on Level 4 of the new entrance wing.

What did the Knights Templar Do The Knights Templar were created by the pope to escort and protect "tourists" going to the Holy Land, and to fight Muslims there. There were originally only a handful, but there were thousands by the time they were disbanded in the 1300's. They were the first bankers. A person could deposit money at one Templar institution, receive a voucher, and turn it in at any other Templar institution. Though charging interest was illiegal at the time, the Templars were permitted to get away with charging a "fee" for the transaction. Eventually they became so wealthy, and so many royals owed them so much money, that they became a target. Interestingly, at the time the Templars were disbanded, the Swiss people (right across the border from France, of course) were mainly farmers with little or no military training.
