London is different | Art and design Police stop the media from filming after a Pro-Tibet demo near the Beijing national stadium in August 2008. Photograph: Dan Chung for the Guardian The Olympic Games are highly commercialised. In China, the Olympics have always served as a tool for propaganda. I don't believe in the so-called Olympic spirit. My memory of the Beijing Olympics has not changed. I see the Beijing National Stadium as an architectural project. I have no regrets about the role I played; the stadium is a work of great quality and design. By publicly announcing that I would not participate in the opening ceremony, I became a minority, an alternative voice. I don't watch TV. I have visited London two or three times. I am interested in seeing what the 2012 Olympics has done to London, but I am not free to travel.

Smithsonian Digitizes & Lets You Download 40,000 Works of Asian and American Art Art lovers who visit my hometown of Washington, DC have an almost embarrassing wealth of opportunities to view art collections classical, Baroque, Renaissance, modern, postmodern, and otherwise through the Smithsonian’s network of museums. From the East and West Wings of the National Gallery, to the Hirshhorn, with its wondrous sculpture garden, to the American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery---I’ll admit, it can be a little overwhelming, and far too much to take in during a weekend jaunt, especially if you’ve got restless family in tow. (One can’t, after all, miss the Natural History or Air and Space Museums… or, you know… those monuments.) In all the bustle of a DC vacation, however, one collection tends to get overlooked, and it is one of my personal favorites—the Freer and Sackler Galleries, which house the Smithsonian’s unique collection of Asian art, including the James McNeill Whistler-decorated Peacock Room. via Kottke Related Content:

Templeton Giacomo Nanni Latourex Choose a town to visit from A to Z. Find the first road beginning with A and the last beginning with Z, and draw a line between the two. Walk the length of this line and discover the city alphabetically. Turn a typical holiday into an aesthetic journey. Spend 48 hours in an airport without getting on a plane. Leave your home on foot. Travel using a means of transport that is old-fashioned or obsolete eg, sedan-chair, palankeen, galley, hackney cab, track motorcar, 2 CV, airship, etc. With the help of a telephone directory (internet, or other method) find a person called Ariadne in a town of your choice. Give Mr or Ms Ariadne a call and ask him/her what his/her favourite 21 places in the town are. Mark each place on a map and visit them in a logical order. Travel on a total budget. Take a tour of the following places known for their administrative function (rather than their touristic value): waiting rooms, social services offices, town halls, police stations.
