Radio AnonOps • Guaranteed eargasms Why Berlin is home to a new generation of beautiful apps When I visited the German capital city of Berlin this week, I took the opportunity to meet as many tech startup entrepreneurs as I possibly could. As they showed me the apps they’d developed, one theme ran through all of them – they were all good-looking, and many of them were world-class gorgeous. Sure, designers from across Europe create very attractive apps, but in many cases they lack that extra sheen and attention to detail that helps make apps from Silicon Valley look that little bit ‘better’, even if functionally there may not be much difference, regardless of where the app was made. Many apps from Berlin seem to have that extra something, and even though you may not have heard of many of the latest generation of startups based in the city yet, if you try their products, you’ll see a flair for design shine through. Berlin style I asked some members of Berlin’s tech startup scene for their favourite examples of the kind of design flair I’m talking about. Berlin’s tech startup future

Dave Grohl And Krist Novoselic Share Memories, Unreleased Tracks From Nirvana's 'In Utero' : All Songs Considered hide captionNirvana in 1993 (from left): Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl. Anton Corbijn Few bands ever reach the popularity, influence and status of the early-'90s rock group Nirvana. Remarkably, Nirvana did all this in a very short period of time, from about 1987 to 1994, and only released three albums during that period. All Songs Considered's Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton spoke recently with Nirvana's two surviving members, drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic, about the making of In Utero. You can hear our interview, and the unreleased songs, by clicking the audio link on this page. Dave Grohl: Well, let's see ... in 1993 I was listening to a lot of The Jesus Lizard, which was a great band that Steve Albini also produced. Bob Boilen: Maybe if you pick something off of that Jesus Lizard, since it's a Steve Albini production. Grohl: I gotta say, Steve Albini was really famous for his signature sound. Grohl: Yeah, I think so. Grohl: No, dude, that record sounds great!

Gene Simmons Calls Peter Criss and Ace Frehley 'Drunks' and 'Losers' It may not be pretty, but if you ask Kiss‘ Gene Simmons a question, you can pretty much always count on a direct answer. Simmons’ recent chat with Rolling Stone — supposedly scheduled to promote the new Kiss book ‘Nothin’ to Lose‘ — was full of brutally forthright responses to a wide (and occasionally fairly inane) variety of questions, including the matter of whether or not he agrees with being portrayed as “the bad guy” in the dismissals of original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. “I am the bad guy,” responded Simmons. “I won’t stand for drunks and alcoholics who get up on stage and consider it their birthright. I consider it a privilege to get up there and arrive on time and be sober, and I’ll be an a–hole to anybody who thinks otherwise. While it’s never fun to be branded a loser, Criss and Frehley can at least take comfort in knowing that, in Simmons’ mind, they’re only two of many. Next: Top 10 Kiss Songs of the 1970s

Gründerszene.de - Infos für Gründer, Unternehmer, StartUps Cherrybombed PeerIndex Takes The Honours As The Europas Awards Drifts Eastwards The Europas, the annual European Tech Startup Awards, ended last night with a triumphant win by PeerIndex the social ranking service, which clinched the Grand Prix award. The result was based on both public online voting and expert judges, recognising the startup’s significant market traction against a much larger competitor, with less resources and a clear path towards both a big consumer and business market. VC DFJ Esprit offered a £50,000 convertible loan note to the Grand Prix winner on the night. After 22 expert judges picked their favourites from 400 entries, and those results where combined with approximately 40,000 public votes from the tech startup industry, clear trends started to emerge from those marked out as Winners and those Highly Commended in the awards. A packed crowd of almost 500 people started their evening with a short welcome video recorded by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who encouraged startups to set up operations in the city. Rob Zombie Talks Halloween, Puppies, Metal Culture & His New Sports Movie (provided photo) October is Metal Month at Radio.com. What exactly does that mean? Well, throughout the month, we’ll have artist interviews as well as mini-documentaries about metal, metal fans and the birthplace of the genre. Google “Rob Zombie” and you’ll notice that the word “Halloween” is not far from the top of suggested search terms. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” Zombie tells Radio.com. Of course, for Rob Zombie, nearly every day is Halloween. “I never had a moment where I thought the visuals are important–it never even crossed my mind that they weren’t important,” he said. White Zombie came out of a scene that didn’t pack a huge visual punch: the New York art scene of the mid-’80s that also included Sonic Youth and Live Skull. “The biggest thing about metal audiences that other forms of music don’t have–some of them do, I’m sure–the longevity and the loyalty,” he said. “The puppy rescue: it’s a funny name,” he admits.

Saxon Interviewed By 1013 Music Reviews.Com (Video) 1013MusicReviews.com conducted an interview with British heavy metal legends SAXON on September 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. You can now watch the chat below. "Unplugged And Strung Up", SAXON's selection of unique, fresh and adventurous interpretations of material previously heard only with raw heavy metal thunder, will be released on November 18. The effort reveals layers and pieces previously dormant in many of the 14 classic SAXON songs chosen for this makeover, thanks to some ear-catching new arrangements and mixes. Recorded, mixed and mastered with Andy Sneap in Derbyshire, U.K. earlier this year, "Unplugged And Strung Up" contains re-evaluated, re-worked and re-energized versions of "The Eagle Has Landed" and "Crusader" by introducing orchestral dynamics to offer added dimension. The standard single CD of "Unplugged And Strung Up" will come in a jewel case, and a double-vinyl gatefold sleeve version of the release will also be available.

10 Best Metal Concept Albums Concept albums can be a tough undertaking, as they leave a band with two difficult tasks — tell an interesting story and record some kick-ass songs. What these albums do is transcend the realm of music, weaving a story into their musical fabric and into the minds of listeners. In what can certainly be a daunting task, many bands have executed this album style to the point of near perfection. Here, we’ve defined a concept album as having a plot, characters, and a setting. Capitol 'The Crimson Idol' Originally intended to be a solo album, Blackie Lawless spent three years creating what would become ‘The Crimson Idol.’ Earache Florida’s Nocturnus broke ground for death metal in 1990, incorporating keyboards to texture the atmosphere, most noticeably in a sci-fi fashion. Warner Bros. 'Blood Mountain' Mastodon Mastodon have managed to carve their own niche in the metal world, achieving widescale success without compromise. Virgin 'Nightfall in Middle-Earth' Blind Guardian J. Peaceville Elektra
