Vegetable Gardening @ the Vegetable Patch: manage your beds with crop rotation and keep pests and diseases at bay Looking for a safe organic way to keep pests and disease under control in your vegetable patch? One of the simplest ways is planting your vegetables based around crop rotation. Crop rotation is all about planting groups of similar vegetables together in a different part of the garden each year. It's important to do this because different crops like different soil conditions. The length of a rotation system can vary from 3 to 8 years. 4 year rotation Crop rotation is all about moving vegetable groups from one bed to another each year. The first bed starts off with a mixture of roots crops (carrots, parsnips and beetroot) and vegetables belonging to the allium family (onions, garlic and leeks). The timing for when you rotate each bed varies depending on the bed and your local conditions. 5 year rotation By now I hope you have a better understanding about how crop rotation works. 6 year rotation The 6 year rotation cycle splits the legumes from the brassicas so you plant: I love potatoes.
Although I am not a farmer now, I do hope to be someday | Start 2 Farm Chad Nordlum completed the Beginning Alaskan Growers School in 2011, the Advanced Alaskan Growers School in 2012 by distance using teleconference and printed materials. Chad plans to attend the 5-day Alaskan Growers School Experiential Learning Course at Calypso Farm and Ecology Center near Fairbanks, Alaska in July of 2012. "I am not a farmer. I grew up in Kotzebue, Alaska. Still, I did not begin gardening until I returned to Kotzebue nearly four years ago. Now that I realize that growing is possible, it only makes sense to produce as much produce as we can locally. What I hope to get from going to Calypso Farm is to gain knowledge of a working farm. My goals are to learn about a working, sustainable farm and to use that learning to continue to plan a sustainable for-profit farm in the Northwest Arctic.
