Portrait Lighting - Portriat lighting set-ups Portrait lighting on the vertical axis – When most portrait photographers discuss portrait lighting, they talk about the lighting set-ups mentioned above. One subject that seldom gets talked about is lighting on a vertical axis. How high should you position the light? There is no concrete answer to that.

R: Por supuesto. R: Más o menos sí. R: En absoluto!

Strobe/Ambient Balance: A Shorthand Way of Thinking Okay, so by now you should have a decent understanding of how you can balance flash flash with ambient light. In this segment, we'll give that process a little shorthand language to help you understand other photographers when they talk about the way the lit a photo. Here, I want to accomplish two things: 1. 2. First, a little confession. I have to be honest with you -- most of the time I have no idea what those numbers were. No kidding, if you ask a professional PJ, "What's your favorite F/stop?" Truth be told, I don't think in terms of absolute F/stops and shutter speeds. Take the photo of my friend Shadi, above. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. If I were talking to another pro about this photo, I would likely just say this: "We dropped the ambient two stops, shot on tungsten, CTO'd the key light (plus an extra quarter cut) and left the rim lights ungelled, about two stops below the main." What were the exposure settings? "Sodium vapor ambient. Let's try it again: What's my reference point? Okay, one more:

Lighting Diagrams | Jake Garn Photography I get lots of questions about lighting, so I thought I’d layout some shots and how I lit (or is it lighted?) them. Hopefully this will be fairly informative, let me know what you think and if you have any special requests! DIY Spiderlight.... SOFTBOX ! Last week I posted a DIY article on building a DIY Spiderlight. If you haven't seen it here it is: I finally had some time to complete the softbox that was meant to go along this light fixture. Here's what it looks like (without the diffuser panel): I am so happy. The whole thing is very lightweight and also really strong. It also costs a fraction of a real softbox. To build this baby you will need: - a 4' x 8' sheet of black corrugated plastic. That's pretty much it! Here's is a piece of coroplast with the layout of one of the big side parts. One of the sides cut out. Here's a template for cutting the sides. Cutout of one of the top/bottom panels. When you bend coroplast in the wrong direction, it can be desastrous. Aluminum foil applied to the panel with spray adhesive.***** UPDATE May 1st 2008 *****It has been brought to my attention that Mylar (the stuff heat survival blanket are made of) could do a much better job of reflecting that precious light. The completed softbox. Yeouch! Yep.
