10 Great Apps That Teach Hangul It’s pretty important to recognize that when you are learning a language like Korean, Japanese, or Chinese that you are not only learning a new way of speaking – but also of writing. A lot of the online sites and curriculum that we tried for Korean expected us to already be able to read in Hangul. That is frustrating, which is one of the reasons I highly recommend the italki community as well as Talk to me in Korean for getting started. But at some point, you have to break down and learn the alphabet. The good news is that there are some great apps for Ipad/Iphone and Android devices that help you and your kids learn Hangul! Here are 10 apps that we have downloaded, tested, and can recommend to you. I’ve provided the links to the apps on Itunes but please note that we haven’t tested them on apple products, only on Android. Jump Baby Korean Alphabet This one is more for younger children. Hangeul step 1 Introduction Welcome. Unlike Japanese and Chinese, the basics of the Korean script can be learned in a matter of hours. The finer points of pronunciation, however, and spacing can take years. The most popular way to write Korean words in modern times is to use the Korean script, Hangeul (한글). English and Korean do not have perfectly matching sounds, so using romanization to represent the sounds of the Korean language is frowned upon. On the following pages we have laid out a six-step lesson plan and have employed various methods to help others learn the Korean script quickly and effectively. A seventh step will also be created in the future to help you with advanced pronunciation. Why Learn the Korean Alphabet?
