A Digital Design Workflow: Tools in Review The world probably doesn’t need one more article about ever-changing design tools, but I’ve had a few people ask what I use in my work at Worthwhile and why, so here are a few thoughts on my current design tool chest and my process. It’s a great time to be doing graphic/web/ui design and prototyping because the competition is increasing, and the tooling options keep getting better and better. At the end of the day, our tools don’t matter nearly as much as the output—it’s the work that matters. In digital design, making only static comps is usually not enough anymore, but I doubt we’ll completely move beyond the need for static design ideation. For me, on nearly every project I’ve been on, showing the client a high-fidelity concept of the final product went a long way in building trust and in opening up important UX discussions.

In this post, I’ll present my prediction for what the next major wave of computing will be. To predict the future, we must first understand the past. Early computers were bulky and filled entire rooms. The mainframes of the 1960s and 1970s had a “centralized” computing model where a single mainframe would serve an entire office building, and “dumb” terminals would send compute-jobs to the mainframe.

GPG Cheat Sheet Quick'n easy gpg cheatsheet If you found this page, hopefully it's what you were looking for. It's just a brief explanation of some of the command line functionality from gnu privacy guard (gpg). Please email me if you find any errors ( scout3801@gmail.com ). Filenames are italicized (loosely, some aren't, sorry), so if you see something italicized, think "put my filename there." I've used User Name as being the name associated with the key.

Discovering Sketch “the designer’s toolbox” During my last trip to San Francisco for the WWDC 2013, I have been lucky enough to meet great people from all over the world that are dedicated and passionate about building better experiences and better tools for designer. I tried Sketch (Mac only) when it was first released a year ago. The lack of some feature and the difficulty to move away from my routines drove me back to Photoshop. Still, the designer community seemed really enthusiastic about it. This made me dedicate some serious time exploring it and teaching myself the basics.

Designing Future-Proof UI – Medium Increasing The Longevity If we want our UI design to stand the test of time and go beyond the conventional expiry date, we can incorporate a number of principles into our workflow and way of thinking that will make it less likely to cause big changes in the future, or put another way, more likely to cause little change. This isn’t a definitive guide, but these principals can certainly go a long way. Be Wary Of Trends Menu Resource A menu resource defines an application menu (Options Menu, Context Menu, or submenu) that can be inflated with MenuInflater. For a guide to using menus, see the Menus developer guide. file location: res/menu/filename.xml The filename will be used as the resource ID.

GPG tutorial and PGP Public Key for Alan Eliasen This was once just a page that contained my public encryption key. It has now grown to become an introduction to how and why to use the GNU Privacy Guard encryption software (GPG) to protect your privacy. It is continually growing. If you have questions, corrections, suggestions, software recommendations, or want to exchange encrypted e-mails, please contact Alan Eliasen. I'm also on the Twitter thingy as aeliasen. 10 Free Sketch Plugins for Web Developers - Hongkiat Sketch is getting a lot of traction among web designers and developers. This is probably because it is intuitive, easy to learn and comes with many features that makes it a lot easier to create a website prototype. It may also be because this application is extensible i.e. you can add new features to the application easily with the help of plugins.
