To clean it up, First, we cleaned out all the dead moss. Once you have picked out your container, fill it with potting soil, leaving it about 6 inches deep. Next, plan how you want your Fairy or Gnome Garden to look. We propped the plan up in the papyrus and got to work landscaping our garden. Mr T was in charge of finding earthworms in the veggie garden to put in the new Fairy Garden. Earthworms are optional. Now, it is time to plant your ‘trees’ and plants. Teaching The Outsiders - Some Novel Ideas It was a tough day in language arts class today. I showed "The Outsiders" today. There are so many things that make this day bittersweet each year. First of all, Patrick Swayze is no longer with us. But, I digress. As I have previously posted, I use guided inquiry as the base for all of my units of study. 1. 2. After introducing the guiding questions, we do a peer relationships opinionaire. The book can be split up easily: six sets of two chapters. Another great activity to do with this book/unit is a grid activity I've adapted from the wonderful book Speaking Volumes: How To Get Students Discussing Books and Much More by Barry Gilmore (Heinemann, 2006). Tomorrow, we're writing six word memoirs on peer relations, using this book as our guide: Thanks to Anne at Read...Write...Talk for turning me onto this book and activity. This year, I'm trying something new for the final project for this unit. I'll try to post some of these next week, too. My unit takes about a month to get through.
Homemade Mocha Coconut Iced Coffees Let me tell you something. When I was a freshman in college, I once ventured to Starbucks. This wasn’t a frequent happening because 1. I didn’t like coffee whatsoever except when loaded with tons of crap and heavy cream… sort of like now, and 2. there wasn’t a Starbucks on campus. Clearly I went to college in the stone age. One night my friends and I somehow hitched a ride (not literally, but you know) to Starbucks and that’s when I saw it on the menu: mocha coconut frappuccino. I.almost.died. Two of my FAVORITE ingredients combined?! I ordered one. I sipped. I almost fainted. I slurped it to the bottom. I almost wet myself from excitement. I literally almost wet myself from drinking 48 ounces of diuretics and sugar. I became poor. [I should also mention that this was the same year I bought a $98 sparkly black belt with my dad's credit card. Starbucks became my new favorite place. HSINZ.T2.TG.Outsiders How to make Caffe Mocha Previously known as: How to make Chocolate Frappuccino Mocha Latte For those of you who are poor like me, or simply love doing things DIY even early in the morning, this is for you. The name is complicated, I swear the ingredients are not. This took me 15 minutes the first time, and It'll take you less once you have the syrup on the ready. This is made from normal coffee, and not expresso. (If you want it to taste more expresso-like, just add a teaspoon more of coffee when you brew it.) I like mine hot, but you can cool it by sticking it in the fridge or adding ice. You will notice that most of the drink is actually just milk, and only 1/4 to 1/5 of the actual mix is coffee. For one cup you will need: Syrup (this makes a small cup of syrup, so you can use it maybe 10-15 times again, same recipe) 1/4 cup of cocoa powder (NOT GROUND CHOCOLATE) 1/2 cup sugar (I used a little less, maybe 3/8) 1 dash salt 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (make your own!) Students may show up in class without having prepared the readings, and this produces frustration for GSIs whose lesson plans depend on students coming to class prepared, as well as for students who have succeeded in doing the reading and are ready to work with the content. How can we motivate students to prepare the readings adequately on their own? How to Make Flavoured Syrups for Coffee Drinks (Food and Whine) I bought myself an espresso maker. I’m not sure what took me so long. My affection for coffee is legendary! I thought today though, I may try to step my barista skills up a bit and move on to flavoured coffee drinks. It took me less than an hour to create a chocolate syrup, a caramel syrup and a vanilla syrup. Here are the recipes for the basic syrups I made today, plus a few more that I’ll make later in the year. Flavoured Syrups for Coffee Drinks Chocolate Syrup 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp. granulated white sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup water Pinch salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract In a medium saucepan, stir together the sugar and cocoa powder until all the lumps are gone. Caramel Syrup 3 Tbsp. packed dark brown sugar 1 cup white granulated sugar 1 cups hot water 1 1/2 tsp. of pure vanilla extract Add the brown and white sugars and the water into a saucepan and stir until combined. Vanilla Syrup 1 cup granulated white sugar 1 cup water 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract Pumpkin Spice Syrup
