How I Survived a 2300% Traffic Increase With Drupal Yesterday, my Orphaned Works article hit the front page of Reddit, a popular social news site. Traffic instantly increased by a factor of more than 20. At peak, the site was serving over 30 requests a second, enough to take down most poorly configured Drupal sites. In this article, I'll show you how I survived, and what steps you can take to make sure your site is ready for the Reddit Effect. These first 2 tips will give you the quickest bang-for-your-buck, and based on my research, more than half of new Drupal sites fail to take advantage of them! 1. Drupal has a tendency for CSS file overload. This is a huge bottleneck that can add tens of seconds to your page load time, and kill your server, in the event of a traffic spike. Luckily, there's a simple solution: CSS Aggregation. To enable CSS aggregation in Drupal, just go to Site Configuration > Performance. Drupal 6 also offers JavaScript Optimization, which does the same thing for JS files. 2. 3. 4. 5. Not all hosts are so generous.

Step-by-step how-to, part one: OpenOffice 2.0's new mail me In my exploration of the new features in OpenOffice 2.0, I've bypassed one that's handy and powerful. Yes, folks, I'm going straight for the glamour, offering you a how-to on the mail merge wizard. Mail merging may not be exciting, folks, but it's a common workday task for many people. Strictly speaking, mail merge is not a completely new feature in 2.0. Get ready. A mail merge is writing one document, and then creating a version of it for every record in a database. Initially, I had mixed feelings about the new mail merge autopilot, to say the least. Once I got through all the windows, I got to the good stuff. So all in all, I like the autopilot. Note: To start the mail merge wizard, you have to choose Tools > Mail Merge Wizard. Here's how it works. Choose Tools > Mail Merge Wizard. Now, the mail merge wizard doesn't provide the same type of design-on-the-fly templates as the letter wizard does. Now, we've come to specifying your database fields in a Long Setup Process. Tired yet?

Texas Forum - Home Design Software By DCG in Lago Vista, TX on 11/14/2008 A "complete" set of plans via non-professional software is unlikely. A complete set of plans would include: 1) Material call-out for non-finish materials - trim, eaves, siding - any little architectural area where you're doing a material change. 2) Finish materials. 3) Structural engineering. 4) Non-structural engineering. 5) Detail drawings. 6) Electrical plans, plumbing plan, HVAC plan, joist plan, roof plan... does the software do all of this? This being said, software is a good place to start. My take on it is that you'll need several different pieces of software to get a fine level of detail that isn't subject to significant bid swings and interpretation.
